Re: Grandmother charges $100 to watch baby.
****ing accountability, how does it work?
When you knock someone up and have a kid, you don't get credit for 'manning up' and getting a job. You are supposed to have a job, you are an able-bodied adult. And you don't get to do lots of fun stuff that you used to do and would like to continue to do, like travel. It's called being a ****ing parent bro. Spinning it as 'Granny should be glad to see the kid' is the biggest load of ****ing horse**** I've ever heard. Granny didn't knock anyone up and has no obligation whatsoever, scratch lottery ticket penchant notwithstanding. You did knock someone up and therefore have significant obligations, i.e. caring for your ****ing kid in lieu of gambling.

Obvious +1.
Lots of us sympathize with a guy trying to supplement his income by playing some poker on the weekends. But if you can't go play those games without finding a babysitter, and you can't find/afford a babysitter you can trust. Then that's just not going to be a part of your life anymore. Sucks, but that's how it goes. If he needs to further supplement his income, maybe he can find a job on the weekends that more easily accommodates his current situation.

Re: Grandmother charges $100 to watch baby.
Babies are such a terrible risky investment. How much money are you dumping into it for a <%1 chance of it actually paying off.

this. Really annoying when family try to dump their dumb kids with you. I've had it happen a few times and I always/usually decline. I'm not a ****ing free babysitter.

Sounds about right.
LOL that grandma should be willing to dump everything and be there to babysit, and should be willing to do it for free over an extended period of time.
My mom loves spending time with her grandson, and does it for free, and she loves him and her son (baby's father) a ton, but she also says it's exhausting and there are times when she's not thrilled with the imposition. If my brother and his wife weren't barely afloat financially, she'd expect them to at least offer to pay for an extended baby-sitting gig. IDK if she'd take it (even though she could use the money herself), but even within loving families, it's not polite to make a huge imposition on another person without offering some recompense.
And watching a 10 month old for a couple of days is an imposition, whether the parent wants to acknowledge that or not.

If I didn't outright decline, I'd ask at least $1000 to do it. Oh that's too much? So sorry.

Re: Grandmother charges $100 to watch baby.
Just want to say this again..
This isn't a 4 year old. You can't sit him in front of the TV with Disney movies and go take a breather. You can't buy him a pizza and make him a sandwich. 10 month olds have to be watched or entertained every single second of the day. He/She is either crawling and getting into ****, or barely walking and getting into ****/falling constantly. The baby also won't be used to the house they are in, or sleeping in the place they are and can easily keep you up all night because of it.
I don't care if you are 25, 45, or 65. Looking after someone elses kid for an entire weekend is a very daunting task.
That doesn't mean asking for money isn't a bit odd, but the overall vibe of the OP is that this is just no big deal. This is a very big deal.
