Re: Gender based drinks
I really don't care if someone is drinking a fake cocktail or not, but I do make generalizations about a person based on what they drink. I think someone who knows how to order cocktails as they were originally made is going to be more sophisticated than say, the guy ordering a vodka martini or whatever. IMO alcohol itself tastes horrible but serves as a complimentary "punch" to the taste buds in a good cocktail, sort of like sugar, fruit, fruit juice, etc. compliment the rest of the mixture in some manner.

Re: Gender based drinks
jws43yale, you are so so wrong.
You are justifying your arguement because only a kid would like a sweet drink? Dumbest arguement ever. You contradict yourself with some of your arguements. There is nothing wrong with enjoying sweet drinks to mask the taste of the alcohol to get smashed ever now and then. You think once you hit 40, you are no longer allowed to ever be drunk? Or want to try and get drunk?
I agree with OP, there is still a bit of a stigma attached with certain drinks. It is still seen as a bit weird for a man to order a cosmo. There shouldn't be, but there is.

Re: Gender based drinks
My neighbors make something with vodka that tastes like blueberries and is deceptively strong. They're like, "You should slow down." and I'm like, "It gun take a lot mur than dis da **** wid me and Ill smack you in yur face, bitch!" It's awesome.

God 2p2 can be dense sometimes.
1) Binge drinking solely to get drunk is considered an immature activity by a majority of society.
2) Hiding the taste of your alcohol with tons of fruit and sweetness implies you are drinking not because you actually like the taste of alcohol but instead you either feel pressured as everyone else is drinking or you want the effects without tasting it.
3) Since 2 either indicates you fall into category 1 or you are doing it for social pressure alone, it makes people think you are immature.
I am not necessarily saying these are my beliefs, I am just trying to explain the reason society views "girly" drinks the way they do. I am 26 and definitely still drink to get drunk on a regular basis and enjoy a sweet drink every once in awhile. These facts don't make me immature but I am at least logical enough to understand why I might be viewed as immature if I was drinking only sweet or "girly" drinks. Also, I note your use of every now and then. I actually agree with you completely on that point but to that end, if you knew someone who was 40 and drank nothing but rum and cokes and various fruit 'tinis (and was drinking a couple of times a week) would you assume they were a responsible and mature adult. Because to me they either are (a) drinking to fit in even though the don't like alcohol (immature) or (b) drinking to get drunk (immature or alcohol problem). A 40 year old who is drinking to get drunk every time they drink either has a real maturity issue or a real alcohol problem (and considering I have never met a drunk who doesn't like beer or straight liquor I think the tables are tilted one way).
As we mature so do our tastes. There is a reason a 5 year old hates their vegetables and only wants sweets whereas most adults eat a decent variety of things and wouldn't ever want to live off sweet alone. There is a reason my little sister wanted me to buy her Smirnoff Ice when she was 16 and now drinks vodka soda - her tastes have matured. If she still only drank Smirnoff Ice it wouldn't make her immature but I would completely be able to understand if someone who didn't know her thought that way.
Edit: Also do admit there is a grey area in my argument where someone likes a slight buzz but doesn't like alcohol. They could drink sweet drinks a few times a week but none of my arguments would apply correctly to them. I happily acknowledge this but note that I am trying to explain a societal idea and think that most assume someone who likes a buzz but not alcohol will have figured out a healthier or better way to get their kicks by a certain age, rather than drinking something to mask the alcohol.

Re: Gender based drinks
My favorite summer drink is a vodka, diet tonic with a lime. Diet tonic is much less filling than regular tonic imo, plus obviously less cals but that's secondary benefit.
There is no other more refreshing drink imo.

Re: Gender based drinks
I would counter that with a moscow mule. Vodka, lime and ginger beer. Must be ginger beer, not ginger ale and ideally Fever Tree which is awesome. Super refreshing with a great ginger bite.

There are a few problems with this argument, but the main one is your assumption that mature people drink because they like the taste of alcohol. Nobody likes the taste of alcohol. If you don't believe me, try drinking straight Everclear. All alcoholic beverages are designed to mask the taste of alcohol, to varying extents.
You are correct that part of being mature is having expansive taste, but someone with expansive taste will be able to enjoy a Bahama Mama just as much as a scotch on the rocks.

Re: Gender based drinks
My drink of choice is Jack and Coke or heavy high ABV beers. But I will steal one of my wife's wine coolers once in a while if I want something sugary. I think ordering an Alabama Slammer at a comedy club is about as girly as I'll get though. That has happened once or twice, mainly because their beer selection is ass.
What makes them gay is how they are served. Not that they are more palatable and colorful. Pull that umbrella out and squeeze the orange peel into there then chuck it and stand up and pull your c0ck out and beat it 'til a reputable girth is acquired and drink away. No one will say anything as you've established alpha maleness.

I hear statements to this effect a fair bit...what do people mean when they say that? I don't see how one drink can be less filling than another if you're consuming the same volume

Re: Gender based drinks
That Kids in the Hall skit needs more love. Some of those drinks were just downright ridiculous.
Pisco here in Peru is pretty good actually for a hard liquor and Anisado as well , an anise flavored liquor. I used to hate Greek Ouzo and Sambuca but somehow don't mind Anisado. After the initial 1st drink the hard liquors really do go down easier.
I actually love experimentation with alcoholic drinks despite not being a heavy drinker and initially restricted myself to trying most of those "girly" drinks but I have expanded my horizons.
It's also more than the beverage itself , it's the whole culture surrounding it. The mixing of the drinks , garnishes , specialized glasses for various drinks. It's a science at this point which I find interesting.
I remember when I was young and my dad would drink scotch I would ask him why on earth would you want to drink something you need to dilute in water in order to enjoy it. I laugh at that comment now as it seems that scotch and water or neat are the preferred methods of drinking it.
I really do want to enjoy drinking straight hard liquor or some strong mixed drinks because I find beer drinking way too laborious if you want to get a buzz. I drink beer mostly for taste now.
One of my favorites I didn't mention is a Washington Apple. Whisky, Sour apple pucker and cranberry juice. Pretty refreshing on a hot day and goes down easy but of course it also probably qualifies as one of the girly drinks.

I'm no scientist and didn't research it but I assume it has to do with the level of carbonation. More of it means more bloating , hence the less filling aspect.
Either that or the density of the liquid you're consuming.
These are just guesses based on reasoning so I could be way off.

Re: Gender based drinks
when i am in vegas and drinking for free ill have some white russians, love those things
typically at a bar im just getting a rum and diet or gin and tonic or beer though. or shots- i have no problem ordering "girly" shooters like a red headed slut or something.
im not really a fan of super sweet pinappley drinks though, and a white russian isnt gonna get me drunk enough to have in a bar.
if you like that **** thats fine- try a dirty bong water. its a girly tasting drink with less stigma imo.
its up to you in the end though. if you wanna wear salmon v-necks and skinny jeans go ahead but if you were a friend of mine youd have to expect getting your balls busted. i wear pink sometimes but im not insecure so its no problem, thats what this comes down to.
