One thing Kittenger said is that because the atmosphere is so thin up there, at first he was afraid he wasn't falling because he didn't feel anything. He was so far from the Earth and there was no noticeable wind he said something like it just felt like he was floating at the start.

his terminal velocity will go down as he gets closer to earth and the atmosphere isn't so thin. when he pulls his chute he'll be going the same speed as any other skydiver would be at that altitude.

Is he going to be going any faster than a regular skydiver when he pulls the shoot? Granted it's not obvious (to me) that whiplash isn't a concern in normal skydiving....if I ignore the fact that people do it all the time.

Pretty sure he'll be going ridiculously fast when he pulls the first chute. But it won't be a very big one and will only provide a little bit extra drag initially. So he'll go from like 550mph and open the chute and maybe slow him down 100mph initially and then faster than if he just stayed in freefall.

i read somewhere, think it was a prior article, that the most dangerous part is the initial jump because if the motion of his jump is wrong he'll go into a spin that there is no way to recover from and his brain will fry or something from it. no idea if it was true though.

I saw that as well and laughed.
Watched it again, the guy that flips him off is undoing the zipper of Kittingers suit; Kittinger is saying something( that may have triggered flip off) just prior; anyone read lips?
