FLEAS!!!
So i went away for the weekend and asked my mom to watch my old english sheep dog for the time being. She has 2 dogs that are in her house, but shes kind of a nutcase and I doubt she remembers to get her dogs flea medicine every few months like you're supposed to. Long story short, Just saw my dog has a nasty cut (him biting himself) and look at his belly and sure enough hes like 8 to 10 fleas roaming around (this after only a 10 second inspection as I was disgusted and immeditely drove to feeders supply).
I got the flea shampoo and gave him a 10 minute scrubbing and hose him off. Take him home, search...still found a couple on him. Go wash him again this time scrub for 15 minutes..and damn im still finding 1 or 2. You cant give dogs the flea treatment until a few days after giving a flea bath..so what the ****? Also, why can't you grab these bastards off the dogs? They are impossible to catch.
Sooo...anybody got any advice? I dont have carpet as I've heard that is a huge problem when dealing with fleas. I have a small apartment so im assuming get 1 bomb? Anybody that has dealt with this id much appreciate some advice as I just got him a couple of weeks ago and aside from having family pets growing up im pretty new to this.
Thanks
edit: also any advice to how bad i might have fleas(gross) just laying next to him. Should I cage him immeditely? does it matter?

Re: FLEAS!!!
I thought these things would die as long as your dog has been taking Comfortis regularly? Those fleas are likely all over your mom's dogs b/c they aren't medicated so they are capable hosts but I think once you have your dog quarantined (away from those host dogs) the fleas will die pretty soon.
I really don't know, though. Contact your veterinarian tomorrow morning I'm sure they'll have good advice over the phone (at least).

Re: FLEAS!!!
You might have to shave your dog and bomb your apartment depending out how bad they are.
We had a cat(strictly indoors) when I was younger that got out the house 1 day and was only outside for 2-3 mins. She ended up getting COVERED in fleas. We used the shampoo a couple times but it didn't help so we had to shave the cat(lol) and set off 4-5 bombs in the house before we finally got rid of them.

Re: FLEAS!!!
well luckily for me he had just recently been shaved down basically to his skin (matted hair). Otherwise with a sheepdog their hair is so long i might have never spotted them.
PHB, appearantly fleas live up to a year! Crazy. Im guessing the apartment needs to be bombed. I kinda dont want to sleep in bed tonight.

Re: FLEAS!!!
Hmm, don't know anything about bombing. When our dog got fleas I remember putting some liquid medicine down her back which seemed to kill them all in a few days (iirc). Then we got her on monthly Comfortis which is supposed to keep them off.

Re: FLEAS!!!
Capstar.
It won't prevent future fleas, but will kill them all. It's a pill and works wonders. In the meantime vacuum your apartment religiously to catch any that might have fallen off as well as their eggs. You may not have to bomb it.

Re: FLEAS!!!
did you ever find them like on you? MY dog slept on my bed last night, i guess it doesnt matter. Im not getting a hotel. He's definitely not scratching and biting near as much since i cleaned him. Maybe a couple survived but will die overnight from the shampoo
edit: and yes im a huge pussy when it comes to bugs and **** crawling around unnoticed.

hardwood floors though. I mean i just couldn;t find any answers as to how quickly they can spread. Like lets say i found 10 on him today but 0 tomorrow. Mean i might be in the clear? Most sites have said only 5% of your flea population are actually on the animal itself. Kind of has me worried i guess.

Still vacuum..hardwood floors or not. You aren't hurting anything, but you are helping. I've had pets get fleas before and I've always treated and they've gone away. I've never had to bomb. That might be from catching them early or from just luck. As a whole they aren't going to survive without a host.
In the future if you find them on your dog give him a Capstar pill and it will kill them all almost immediately. You can then give him a treatment to prevent future fleas.

Re: FLEAS!!!
Fleas are terrible. I got a flea infestation in my apartment even though I don't have pets. My neighbor's cat was an outdoor cat, and I guess I pet it on my way in or something, and I wound up with a nasty infestation. It took multiple bombings, powderings of my rug, washings of all my sheets and bed linens, and then still some spot sprayings with some spray to get rid of them. Full scale chemical warfare is the only option. Don't hold back. Use anything and everything, and keep using it until they're gone. There's no one thing that seems to get rid of them entirely in one treatment.

No, they're not gone. I wouldn't breathe easy until you've gone at least a week without seeing a flea.

Re: FLEAS!!!
Confused why your vacuum was in storage if you own a sheepdog. Or any dog for that matter.

Make sure your dog is rid of them before you bomb. It will be worthless otherwise as you'll just bring them back into your house.
