I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but he likes to call out amateur comedians who make "racially insensitive" or "sexist" jokes, when that's literally every joke that is done on 40 Year Old Virgin.

He should get a lot of credit for making the worst movie of all time (This Is 40)

That scene of Paul Rudd in the bathroom is pretty funny though.

Apatow has done more to ruin modern comedy film making than any single person ever. Because of him nearly every major studio comedy that has been released in the past decade has to spend the 2nd half of the film with the protagonist learning from the "error of his ways."

He opened with about 15 minutes of traditional stand up which wasn't bad but then there were a lot of stories about Judd Apatow being Judd Apatow and it wasn't really what I would call stand up any more. He'd flash some photos on a screen and tell some stories about them "Hey, here I am with Adam Sandler when we were 19". "Now here I am with President Obama who cracked a funny joke and made my wife laugh". It felt a little easy and lazy.

Not to mention the set up for the Netflix special was long, not Apatow's fault of course. They were pulling people from the line to make sure they had the faces they wanted in the first few rows and even once we were in and seated they were moving people around. This caused the show to start quite late. Apatow was booked for 7, he did a one hour set and we had to hustle to make Trevor Noah at 9:30.

Pics of the set and the main crowd wrangler...

This is patently wrong. 40 Year Old and Knocked Up are both great. Freaks and Geeks is goat television. He just produced The Big Sick which might be my favorite movie of the year so far.

I'm not crazy about Funny People or This is 40 but Trainwreck, while not top tier, was pretty funny if a little long.

no the 1st halves of $0 y/o Virgin and Knocked up are funny, the 2nd halves are 3rd rate romantic comedy wannabes designed to draw a larger female audience. In both films everything that is funny about the 1st half is completely the opposite because they have to go for that " aww shucks moment" designed to make women like them when the main character fixes the flaws about them that made them funny in the 1st place.

Sorry I'm just now seeing this rbk. I will for sure. I do try to be selective about what shows I promote bc a lot of the booked shows I do in town are shows in bars, coffee shops, etc. and I can't vouch for the quality of the show. Tonight I'm doing a spot on a show at a comic book shop in Burbank although the line up for that one seems pretty damn strong. I do produce my own show once a month and I promote the hell out of that, and can def vouch for it bc I only book working comics.

wires, and anyone else:

i haven't seen any birbiglia stuff in a while, i do like him though. i can't remember - is he a clean comic? i'm gonna be in boston when he's on and i might take my parents, but idk. they are old and english and like a couple of the huge middle of the road uk comedians. i have never heard them offer an opinion on an american comic. i feel like the only person i could confidently take them to would be seinfeld.

also going to be in NYC around the same time (october), so if there any any recommendations i'm open to it. right now just intending on going to the comedy cellar. when i do go to comedy clubs i like easy access to drinks and bathrooms.

Comedy Cellar is the best, try to go on a weeknight rather than a weekend show imo as they will usually just have one long show with a ton of people rather than breaking it up into two shorter sets on the weekends. In my experience you'd see just as many "name" comics on like Thursday as well as tons of great up and comers. Get Mamoud's falafel nearby, you may need to ask someone where it is as the storefront is tiny.

Also if you're specifically craving comedy you can check out the Upright Citizens Brigade theatre on like 23rd and 8th/9th (can't recall offhand) for improv shows - their big show is AssCat on Sunday nights, Amy Poehler sometimes performs in addition to a bunch of other people you'd recognize. I don't know the schedule that well but my brother used to be in a Harold group (long-form improv) there on Friday nights and the shows were always really good.

Yep, and it turns out the winner is a poker player (or former player? I'm sure he's got 2p2). Anyway, personally I liked Adele's, Alexei and Andy's.

I saw Iliza Schlesigner being discussed....it is unbelievable how not funny she is. Check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kUy1674CFk&t=155s

Netflix has a special called Jerry Before Seinfeld coming out on the 19th. Should be interesting.

TJ is very polarizing, he's loose, free form and silly. What you get is going to vary from night to night, and some people who prefer a more traditional set up punch style don't care for him. I've seen him a few times and always laughed a lot, but its the kind of thing where I can't even really remember the jokes once the show is over. Honestly, there is enough of TJ in pop culture that you should already have a decent idea of who he is and if you'll like it.

Nick Vatterott is hilarious. Like TJ, he is high energy and weird, but has a little more structure.

I've never seen Rhys Darby.
