What makes a man? What makes a man?

I've been wondering lately what everyone expects a "man" to be able to do. Once you're the man of the house, there are certain things you ought to be able to do...what are they? I'm asking because I think my perception might be skewed...

I recently went camping with my wife, her sister & our brother-in-law. BIL had borrowed a 16ft Airstream trailer from a friend of his and had a really hard time backing it up. I eventually took over for him and backed it into our camping spot. BIL is a pretty normal guy, not particularly "manly," just your average guy.

I confessed to my wife that I thought a little less of BIL because he wasn't able to back up a trailer. Not sure why this bothered me, but it seems like this is something every man should be able to do.

So give me your examples of what the man of the house ought to be able to do. Fix the car, change the oil, clean the gutters, back up a trailer, grill a wicked steak, drink scotch neat?? What?

If it matters, I'm waiting on a soy chai latte for my wife right now...

I cant fix a car, I've never tried to change oil it's cheap enough to pay for it.

Seriously get bills paid, provide food and make sure your family is in good shape.

Being a single man is a different.

I've always thought it had to do with whether or not you can make one heap of all your winnings and risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, and lose, and start again at your beginnings, and never breath a word about your loss.

Def. Changing a tire. Nothing is more pathetic than seeing a guy on the side of the road calling AAA or whoever just because he's got a flat.

Well, now that you mention it, I really do feel that your source is a pretty outstanding choice of definition(s). (except for the bit about kings & commoners lol class warfarez)

I know a guy that everyone views as a man's man. He can do everything in the OP and more. I went fishing with him and he asked me to bait his hook for him. Seems live worms just bother him. The way they wiggle and stuff. He hunts and I have seen him get his hands dirty so this surprised me. I baited his hook and never said a word about it. I just wanted to fish not get slapped around by some worm fearing lady boy.

where do you learn how to back up a trailer? This coming from someone who recently feels he is proficient in the art of parallel parking.

The Big Lebowski: What makes a man, Mr. Lebowski?
The Dude: Dude.
The Big Lebowski: Huh?
The Dude: Uhh... I don't know sir.
The Big Lebowski: Is it being prepared to do the right thing, whatever the cost? Isn't that what makes a man?
The Dude: Hmmm... Sure, that and a pair of testicles.

Absolutely, this is such a basic skill and there's absolutely no reason that you should be calling someone in to change your tire...I guess if you're in a suit & you have no spare or something that's ok.
