Basically all these other ways to kill the animal (Sticky traps, just throwing it in the dumpster, flushing it down the toilet) are much crueler to the animal than instant death, they just make it easier on the person doing the killing because taking a hammer to the head of cute little fury animal is a hard thing to do. But in my opinion you are dealing with life, and life is sacred, and if you are going to make the decision to end another creatures life, you owe it to that creature to do it in the best way possible. It doesnt matter if that way is the hardest way for you. If you cant handle what needs to be done, then you shouldnt be making the decision to end somethings life.
This is very well said. OP you did the right thing. Those mechanical traps are usually very good. I use them and I either find the trap triggered with no animal or always with the neck crushed under the bar. Keep using them. I did have issues with baby possums getting in trap and they were too big for the trap to kill them. I had to bludgeon a baby possum in the trap as well because I knew it was suffering and wanting to end it's suffering. Not fun doing it but you'll get over it. I question the ethics of your roommates if they'd rather just throw an animal alive into the trash leading to more suffering just because it's easier for their feelings.

I crunched a mouse's head once, for the reason its much more humane then letting it die in those brutal sticky traps. Haven't read much of the thread but I assume LOL WOMEN type comments rightfully predominate.

I beat a mole to death, I think, with a stick when one of the cats injured it.

Moles aren't cute, though.

I disagree with this. People hunted for their food for millions of years. I think city life has re-wired most of us to be squeamish about this thing and the normal way would be to just get on with it.

Killing a song bird dragged in by a cat is about infinity times more distressing than killing a mouse.

Dont know how they know, but they know exactly how to make noises that peirce straight to the heart.

I don't know.......
I mean, it is distressing to kill a living being. But.... May be since I lived till 6 in the environment, where for every piece of meat you had really to kill this chicken or this pig, I see it as normal.

When I was about 10~11, I tried to feed every stray cat, that came across my way. And once I found a kitten whom I fed for few weeks with his belly cut open. Yes, there are people in this world who enjoy torturing living beings. He was still alive and cried and his intestines were all around him. What should I have done? I asked one of the grandmas for an ax. She understood my problem and killed the kitten for me. I buried it. I know that I did the right thing and honestly..... It wasn't so disturbing for me, like may be it would be, if I never seen death previously.

I know this is 9 plus years old but the right play would be to have gotten human-sized sticky traps and use them on the roommates. They will ultimately beg to have their heads bashed in with a hammer.
