What about when you're sort of "on the fence" shopping... say for shoes, and you make the sales person grab a few boxes and then you decide you really don't actually like the shoes as much as you thought, so they have to go put them back in the back.... is that stealing too?

do people that go into stores 'trying things out' tell the workers helping them that they have every intention of going home and buying the item online instead of purchasing it there?

I think most people who shop in stores go there because they can get advice and ask questions about different products.

I can't think of a single thing I'd need to " try out " in a retail store before buying. Computers? The only thing that matters about computers is their specs, which are online. You can view the case online.
Laptops, not desktops. After specs, the most important things to me about a laptop are the feel/layout of the keyboard/touchpad and the quality of the display. I've actually never tried a laptop before purchasing online, but now that many online models are sold in stores, I could see myself doing it the next time I need one.

Obviously, there are a lot of other things that people like to try or at least see before they buy, some of which have already been mentioned.

The thing I think most people are missing is that B&M stores generally offer services that online stores don't offer. They offer the ability to try out or inspect a product at no cost before purchasing it. And that service can be relatively expensive to offer and it usually results in higher prices. Is it really ethical to use those services without any intention to buy from them?
i don't really feel bad for them because many of the larger B&M chains drove out small mom n pop shops through various tactics.

The death of the larger stores is just further evolution of the marketplace imo

I'm fine with being cheap - but I don't even see this as being cheap. It seems more like common sense to me.

If I go to two stores to compare prices is that also cheap?

you are looking for all of the benefits of a B&M store at the price of an online retailer. you are using the stores resources with no intention of paying for them. that is definitely being cheap.

going between stores is moot anyway since all retailers will price match the same item if you ask, but this isn't as bad since you at least plan on giving them your business.

Re: Ethics of using a store to try products that you will buy online

So the two options are a) pay more money (no matter how much) to see the product before purchasing or b) buy something sight unseen, aside from pictures?

Re: Ethics of using a store to try products that you will buy online

The funny part is that if you asked the owners of the B&M store if they'd want you to waste "their resources" in this exact scenario I'm sure the vast majority would say yes.

It still gets people into their store and they'll still sell more merchandise than if these people stayed at home and just bought online.
