as a (non-practicing, former) CPA, i can attest that issuing CORRECTED w-2's are a pita. therefore, you want ot make sure everything is checked and double-checked before issuing the w-2

Students always get shafted on withholding, because they get withheld assuming they'll work 12 months, but they always work far less.

That's less than 1 month to print millions of W-2s.

Companies are not using a payroll service because they are accounting geniuses either. Errors may have gone uncorrected since last January and unnoticed until the employer receives his forms.

Can someone explain to me how this decision benefits the company in any way? Because I just don't see it.

(I doubt it matters, but in this case, the employer in question is one of those massive casino companies that's been pretty much broke throughout the entire economic downturn. Could it be that they've laid off so many folks in accounting, that the few remaining will have to work right up to the deadline to get these forms prepared? I mean, is there anything to prepare? because if for any reason the business needs to submit any year end changes after the 31st, it may have already received W2's and if changes are necessary, new W2s will need to be shipped, and they wont want you rushing to do your taxes with the wrong W2. Thats what happened in my situation with my one employee. I didnt give her the first one and waited for the new one to come last week until I gave it to her.
