+1

I remember I also recommended Sauza, but a different one than used in this test. I'm a big fan of the Sauza Hornitos which is 100% agave. Yeah, the Sauza Hornitos is definitely one I considered bringing myself, in no small part because of your recommendation. However, most of the tequilas people were bringing were right in that same price range, so I kinda wanted to pool my resources with my friend and get something more expensive to broaden the range and so it wouldn't just be Patron getting beaten up on the high end. Finding the best of a set of $20-$25 tequilas is good, but throwing some cheap ones and some expensive ones in there is necessary to have the big surprises that make the testing so much fun. Still, if I were to go back and add one more tequila of my choice, it probably would have been the Hornitos. I could definitely believe that it would be a solid one, knowing that Sauza does a good job with their base brand, but it's certainly not a given!

i don't sip the blanco / plata tequilas like these freaks (these are basically intended for shooting imo) but some of the better aged tequilas can be sipped just like whiskey.

I disagree. As someone who has taken middle school spanish it appears to say Asom Bros. Dangerously close to Awesome Bros aka the Bang Bros

Hey, I didn't mess this up. Look at the bottle. They obviously made it two words.

To drag this thread into the gutter, the description my friend gave me when saying I should try AsomBrosa is that "I can't remember the name, something Rosa, but the bottle looks like a huge penis."

She was, in fact, correct.

Thanks Wookie.
We have tried this with just 3 types a couple of times. We had a mix of crap(Cuervo Gold), Special edition Sauza Añejo and El Jimodor Reposado... Sauza won. 4 1sts and one 2nd. Cuervo voted last by everyone.

2nd Time was a Two Fingers(don't remember what type), 1800 Anejo and Sauza Hortinos. The Sippers prefered the 1800 and everyone else(4 people) picked the Sauza. Two Fingers was a step below and was much harsher. But I believe it was just the cheap stuff.

We just have someone(a tequila hater) pour everyone three one/two oz glasses in another room and bring us marked glasses. So everyone does know the red glasses are the same stuff... not perfect but blind with a small social bias.

Love your booze reviews.

yeah i agree with this - it CAN be done. although for me it's hard not to think of various terrible experiences on tequila so i can't do it anymore. alas.

nice post wookie, wasn't surprised where patron ended up, the winner i've never heard of.

Doesn't the AsomBros bottle say 200% Agave? I don't even know what that means, but that's what it looks like.

I also like how you got the gf brag in there as well.

Fun times Wook. Glad to see Patron is probably more marketing than taste, cause I don't particularly like it.

I think it's just the oddities of a digital picture. My bottle definitely only says 100%.

Interesting. Do you remember if the Two Fingers you tried was gold or clear? Also, was the Sauza Hornitos you tasted the blanco, reposado, or anejo?

And also, I don't think too many of us are actually planning on sipping many of these straight in the future, although I'd consider it with the Asom Broso and the Hacienda Vieja. It's just that in order to get a good sense of what we liked the taste of, we'd take a few sips to give it a more thorough evaluation rather than a quick shot. We did the same thing with vodka.

MrWookie,

I wish to commend you for your great public service in performing these tests.

As an aside, I would like to report that some friends and I performed a similar double-blind test using all the white tequilas available in San Miguel de Allende in 1975. There were approximately 7 of them. First place was unanimous: Herradura. This despite the fact that Herradura, at ~=$1.90 a liter, was ~70¢ more than any of the other runners.

Second place was not awarded.

Awesome thread, gonna have to try some Asom Brosa.

I forget what won the Vodka thread, but wasn't Smirnoff rated much higher than a lot of the expensive stuff?

Yeah, Smirnoff won the vodka test.

I really nice tequila is wonderful for sipping...After only having access to terrible tequila for a good part of my life, finding those superior brands that are worth sipping was a revelation.

I should have added that I've never sipped tequila and thought these people were nuts. I used to drink lots and lots of Porfidio and Patron shots in my early 20s and now days I cringe when people buy me shots of Patron even. If I'm the least bit hungover instant gag reflex kicks in when I smell the tequila. I wouldn't even attempt a Jose shot unless the door was nearby. Oh to have the stomach I had at 23.

Just found the thread using search after cruising the equivalent vodka test. If a full test on Reposado or Anejos is ever done please link it from here so I can find it!

As an aside I think that phallic winner is on sale at Costco

never been a big fan of Anejos. Tastes too much of the cask its aged in and loses some of the tequila characteristics imo.
