The thing with sushi is that you can just put whatever the hell you want in there and make it and it's delicious. Sometimes, cream cheese goes in there and sometimes it doesn't!

I've had Philadelphia rolls where the whole thing was deep fried, I thought it was quite a bit better than when it's not deep fried. It's sensitive, though - the trick is to make a crispy outside without actually cooking the fish at all.

Here's one better: Replace the rice with batter and the fish with chicken

Something deep fried is better than when it's not deep fried??

But seriously, a few sushi places have a great roll that is deep fried jalapeno stuff with salmon, cream cheese, rice, and cucumber. Then drizzled with eel sauce. Sort of a cross between a philly roll and a jalapeno popper. Freakin' awesome.

Cream cheese is delicious on crisply toasted English muffins or toast, but is absolutely positively revolting when it is included in sushi. But I'm on the warpath on a similar issue and thus am likely biased, because the sushi chef in the semi-fast-food place in my office building has started including avocado in ALL of the sushi he puts in the to-go case. I want my plain fish and rice for lunch, thank you very much.

I voted no, but I'm actually OK with cream cheese in sushi so long as a) there are non-cream-cheese options available and b) there is a large red skull-and-bones warning next to every cream-cheese sushi item saying "DANGER: CREAM CHEESE."

No. Cream cheese, or any kind of cheese doesn't belong on sushi. Neither does chicken.

I voted yes. The reason is, if your definition of sushi is mainstream enough to include **** like california roll, then it stands to reason that cream cheese belongs.

It is indeed a little known secret. I would say with sushi if you deep fry it too much so the fish isn't still completely raw, then it's worse than if you don't deep fry it. But if it's deep fried so just the outside is crisped then it's great.

Thumbs up to both of these. Neither avocado nor cream cheese belong anywhere near sushi that I'm going to eat. (Not going to argue about the platonic ideal of sushi and whether cream cheese or avocado belong. Although they don't.) If my wife randomly picks up sushi for us at, say, Whole Foods, I think she knows that I avoid cream cheese, but she still is a little careless about the avocado.

She also puts avocado in her grilled cheese sandwiches, which I don't even

Chile says yes! I found out they bastardize sushi way worse than in the US. like 80%+ of the rolls offered had cream cheese inserted in there. every single place i tried was stacked with cream cheese rolls(among some other wtf rolls).

here is an online menu I found just to give an idea (Queso crema or Q. Crema = cream cheese)

Also, if it has cream cheese on it it's not sushi, by definition.

Finally, lox are not sushi either.
you're so wrong on this.

The only thing sushi means is "flavored rice". It doesn't even have to have fish in it to be considered sushi.

Gah, take your pedantry elsewhere. There's an old quote:
“Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.”

If your technically correct definition of sushi leads to you accepting things like cream cheese, avocado, peanut butter, or olives in your "sushi", then you've sacrificed wisdom for knowledge.

There's nothing wrong with avocado in sushi. Though mango or any kind of other fruit is horrible
