I saw a show on TV titled "19 kids and counting" yesterday. It made me ****ing want to murder everyone. ****ing white trash animals.

Good thing the poor and uneducated still die at fantastic rates and are so crippled by poverty and disease they die young. We just need death rates to catch up to birth rates.

I thought given various countries' burgeoning pension debts because of the baby boom kids that you would be doing your country a great service to be having kids right now.

There was an guy on real time with bill maher like a few weeks ago I think who wrote a book about overpopulation and he said that the optimal population is somewhere between 1 and 2 billion.

16,000 children die every single day. There's over 100,000 kids in the US in foster care. But **** em, I need ones that look like me.

Always thought being buried in a cemetery was selfish, though. Basically claiming a spot of otherwise useful piece of land for eternity. Unmarked graves might be fine, I guess.

I thought we needed like 2.2 to break even? So, given a lot of people won't have kids, 3 seems reasonable. I'd say more than 4 is a bit crazy.

Isn't adoption a huge pain in the ass? FWIW, I would have adopted kids, but my wife didn't want to. Weird?

Every generation points at something and says "The world is coming to an end soon if we don't do something about it right now." It seems natural to have such fears but I wouldn't let it dominate your thoughts too much.

The fear of overpopulation has been around for a while. The Population Bomb was published in 1968 and warned of dire consequences in the '70s and '80s if immediate and radical action wasn't taken. Unless they were talking about disco and hair bands, I think we survived.

You might want to consider some alternative opinions.

Having a child is inherently unselfish, you divert resources from yourself to a dependent other. So no, it's not selfish.

I have 3 kids. I'm stressed and busy 24/7. If I decide to do something else, anything, it'll be considered selfish.

Last two posts completely miss the point. We're talking about making the choice of having kids, not about taking care of the kids once they're born. No one decides to have kids because it will make the world a better place, people decide to have kids because they think their lives won't be complete without them, therefore it's inherently selfish.

It's probably a dumb choice for selfish reasons too considering how much parents complain.

At what point (of overall population) should adopting become more important than procreation?

It's one of those laughably stupid articles where it seems inherent that whoever wrote it has other interests, not unlike infinite growth economists with well paying consultancy jobs.

It's also remarkable that an article about overpopulation never mentions energy consumption and global warming.

This is a matter of eugenics, and it would seem that some of the 'elite' of this world would agree with op.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Eugenics_Society

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Eugenics_Society

"In 1930 many of the wealthiest people in the world were members of the American Eugenics Society.

It earliest members and sponsors included:

J. P. Morgan, Jr., chairman, U. S. Steel, who handled British contracts in the United States for food and munitions during World War I. Wickliffe Draper used his J. P. Morgan Trust Account to fund The Mississippi Sovereignty Commission and its activities.

Mrs. Mary Duke Biddle, tobacco fortune heiress whose family founded Duke University."

"The Rockefeller family embodied the body of thought of eugenics, and contributed significantly by financial contributions and by activities. Worth mentioning are involuntary sterilization programs in Puerto Rico, Brazil and California, development of contraceptive edible plants and including HCG into a widely distributed tetanus vaccine to silently create sterility for women of childbearing age in Mexico, Philippines and Nicaragua (Engdahl, 2004)."

This is simply untrue and highly presumptuous.

A lot of things about adoption are a PIA, my parents adopted my sister when she was two and then her half-sister when she was two--seven years later. Socializing a two-year-old into a family with kids is awkward at best and an emotional cluster bomb at worst.

In both cases the foster mother had strong bonds with my sisters so perhaps it was just uniquely difficult.
