if you did give them 2k for a new chess set who would pay for the remaining taxes on the estate if you come up short?

Send her a pawn in an envelope and tell her $7k or the set gets destroyed.

Besides the other obv reasons, this leads me to believe the note is forged. Richard probably gives the aunt some grief about this every now and then.

The fact that aunt passed over it twice and dad took it on his 2nd pick means it must also have some value to him.

Dad keeps the set imo.

If that's true how can you not be 100% on dad's side here?

They should have done a snake draft originally

Why do the sides of the family hate each other so much?

Well in that case, why did you start this thread in the first place? Tell Betty to get lost.

Take the knight and cut off the horse's head, bloody it up and have an Irish lawyer plant it in her bed.

Only because I do feel that my grandparents intentions were that Richard was to get the chess set. (I don't really think the letter is forged, Betty isn't nearly smart enough to pull that off. My aunt is though...)

Asking my dad to give it to Richard is IMO the right thing to do, and it also means much less of a headache for me (selfish but true).

Easy, it belongs to your dad. You can't go back two years later and try to get it back especially since she gave up the chance to pick it twice. She obviously didn't want it that bad.

Watch the following video for inspiration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTU8OYBJfsY

Take everything the perpetrators in that video did to the plastic flamingos and make a video with your dad doing those things to the chess pieces. Send it to Richard along with the severed heads of the queens.

Simple. Everything was in the trust. The trust instructions control the disposition. Dad gets to keep the chess set.

Which reminds me if 7k some how gets to them, make sure you report that gain to the IRS so they pay taxes on it

Did your Dad like anything else at top of draft? Can you offer to have the aunt give up one of her first two picks (and possibly a late round pick) in return for the set.

1) China (plates and bowls)
2) Silverware (real silver)
3) Antique cabinet
4) Chess Set
5) Painting (not worth much)
6) Porcelin figurines
7) Coffee table
8) Antique record player (the coolest item of the bunch IMO)

btw your Dad has the better draft here imo, though I wouldnt mind having the good china in exchange for the Chess set and keep that all together kind of thing

Typical sibling BS when folks die. Everyone says it's petty and won't do it when they're in their 20's, then when their folks actually die and they're in their 40-50's this BS goes on. Never fails. People suck.
