And no offense to any of the original actors, but I do wonder what kind of energy and authenticity they can bring to the characters at this point. I mean, I think Harrison Ford is great, for example, but there was something about his performance in Indiana Jones 4 (beyond the awful script) that was just...off. After so many years away from the characters, I think something just gets lost along the way.

And the "a number of other characters" reappearing just has me picturing a bunch of self-aware cameos that are just there for the hardcore fans and add nothing to the story. Like "hey, look at that guy in the background, everybody...it's Wedge!"

Hmm, maybe I'm the one that's irritable now...I think eps 1-3 made me very cynical about the handling of the franchise.
I wouldn't mind mark Hamil have a major role like obi wan. The guy still does good voice work for video games and tv so he might be able to pull something off in film. Harrison Ford just seems like a tired old man. His latest performances lack the edge of the young Harrison Ford in things like Indiana jones and blade runner. No idea what Carrie fisher would be like, probably depends on how coked up she is these days.

Harrison Ford played a cool rogue character as a younger guy but where's he going to fit now? I doubt he's smuggling or doing anything particularly rogue-ish. And Mark Hamill/Carrie Fisher were never particularly good actors to begin with.

Hamill in particular is a problem because bringing back Old Luke is likely to happen one of two ways. First case, they just trot him out for little real purpose other than a super-fanboy self-indulgent cameo. Second case, they trot him out in a mentor role before having to kill him off... which this series has already done with Qui-Gon, as well as Obi-Wan and Yoda's characters in the original trilogy. it's formulaic already.

I liked his character but it ends neatly in Return of the Jedi. You watched him grow up from a kid, be a student, make mistakes, suffer defeats, tragedy, wrestle a bit with his identity, and then eventually become a fully vetted and tested hero. It's a great character arc. He wins. Roll credits.

It would be difficult to bring Han back without bringing back Leia, who is no longer a movie star to put it mildly.

This. When I see a picture of Fisher now, the one word that comes to mind is "Grandma".

If Rocky Balboa managed to solidly pull off "55-60 year old Rocky returns to the ring", I'm fairly certain Luke, Han and Leia's return could be pulled off as well.

I think bolded is very likely. is Disney going to risk their new $4b franchise on the hope that Mark Hamill and Fisher can pick up their characters after...not really being actors...for so long?

I think Hamill has done a lot of voice work for video games and cartoons. Not a great resume for film but it's possible he could pull off a cameo like Spock in the latest start trek movie.

Yeah, Hamill has done tons of voice work- I would imagine he's living pretty comfortably.

I could easily see him having a small role as an older Luke. Carrie Fisher would be a little harder to envision, but I would think a few more pounds of weight loss (or not, probably doesn't matter) and movie make-up artists could make her look just fine. She doesn't have to be sexy like she was in the old movies. She's a matriarch now.

Chewbacca looks like **** now, though. They'd have to replace him.

IMO Return of the Jedi is the worst film. The whole opening Jaba chapter is horrendously thought out, then you have the forest chapter that as someone else mentioned small teady bears take out the most powerful force in the universe. At the time I loved the film but after watching it again, the film is the classic mid-late 1980's blockbuster that looked good at the time but hasnt aged well or was written well.

Sure, as I've said a few times, a cameo/small appearance is most likely and makes sense imo. any more or less and I would be surprised. Leonard Nimoy actually had done even less than Hamill (Hollywood wise) before Star Trek (2009), and they gave him slightly more than a cameo, but his Spock appearances had been more recent. He had a few Spock roles in the late 80's/early 90's, which Hamill last played Luke in 1983. So an 18 year gap for Nimoy vs a (30?) year gap for Hamill. whatever that means lol

Hamill would be fine in a small role. He was good as Cocknocker in 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back'.

Confession time: I have spent a ridiculous amount of time reading/watching **** about star wars in the last week. Stuff like the Plinkett reviews, random articles and this site.

Just came across this gem of an addition to ESB (really small compared to the other atrocities committed by Lucas but it's the most recent one I came across):

Seriously, WTF is wrong with George Lucas?

I think they took that back out. I don't know for sure though didn't buy the blurays. But it makes the case for George to hang it up. For the 10th time in 15 years. Enjoy your retirement

Pretty much, although one could still make an argument that 4>5 just because it works as a standalone movie, and was able to introduce all the characters so well while still having tons of memorable scenes. The battle of Yavin is still one of my favorite sequences in the whole series.

I'll be contrarian and go

5 > 4 > 6 > 1 > 2 > 3

ESB is my favorite movie of all time, followed by New Hope so there's that. Jedi is pretty good and get's major credit for nailing the Palpatine / Vader / Luke climax.

Phantom Menace is awful but it's actually mildly entertaining and it doesn't have the cringe factor of the second. The third film is obviously far, far superior to the first 2 but it has Anakin slaughtering little kids, which is bad, and sabotages the original trilogy (especially the end of Jedi). Those movies never happened though.
