Pixar has mixed results? All of them (except Cars 2) have been very highly regarded by fans and critics. As for box office performance:

Brave isn't in the chart. It grossed $235M in the US, $532M worldwide.

hey, what I meant was if Luke is supposed to be 70 years old now or w/e, Mark Hamill playing him in a cameo could make sense

plus, makeup etc. I'm sure for a big payday they could get the actors in shape

I think that could be a getter option than having a 35 yo Luke played by someone else.

edit: apparently Luke is 22 in ROTJ

The Thrawn books are considered the best of the extended universe.

But there is a very large series of books (the Legacy of the Force series) that follow Luke and the children of Han and Leia.

Spoiler:
In case they make a movie of it, I'll spoil it. Han and Leia's kids all become Jedi (as does Luke's son). But one of them turns to the Dark Side and become a Sith Lord.

Perhaps this has something to do with me reading them in high school, but the Han Solo trilogy is one of my favorites of the SW extended universe.

I really liked the first two volumes of the Darth Bane trilogy, but the last volume was a disappointment. Darth Bane was the Sith who instituted the "Rule of Two." He killed all the remaining Sith and decreed there should only be two, a master and the apprentice.

I think a movie about Han's story would be cool and packed full of action.
I'd definitely watch one about Wedge.

I read an interview years ago in Time I think where potential storylines were laid out for movies 7, 8 and 9. Went something like this, Disney will be sure to change it from Lucas' ideas if they have any sense tho

-Hunting down the remnants of the Empire and finding new potential Jedi.
-A new school of Jedi.
-Rebuilding the Republic.

Mila Kunis as Leia would make me happy.
This is one of the main problems with the new movies, how are you going to create conflict that can compare to that of the fight between the rebellion And the empire? Rebuilding the jedis/Republic sounds good in theory but how would you make this interesting? I think it would be far more interesting if the destruction of the empire actually destroyed the order in the galaxy and the story is placed within some sort of civil war centered around coroscant.

Rebuilding the Jedi order is goIng to be in there but it not like we can go from one Jedi (Luke) to the size the order had in the prequels. I think it needs to be a struggle to reform the order.

These movies will end up taking one of two routes. Either they pander to the fans and try and stuff as much star wars junk into the movies or they create something entirely new. The problem with pandering is that once you start down that route you have to include the whole range of creatures/characters/themes from the other trilogies to satiate the disparate preferences of the fan boys and eventually once you stuff it with jedis, bounty hunters, space ships, wookies, smugglers, walkers, etc, etc, etc, etc you end up with a movie that's entirely too generic and indistinguishable from the other trilogies.

Hopefully they learnt the lesson of the prequels and actually try and produce as much new material as possible with a humorous nod here or there. The fastest way to make another mediocre trilogy is to pander to the fan boys. What made the original trilogy so good was that it was constantly blowing your mind with new locations and character as the main characters played out a well developed and interesting story arc.

I am cautiously optimistic but I am not going to be surprised if this ends up being another mediocre star wars product ala prequels, SWTOR, clone wars, 99% of the books and comics.

That's what happened in the Extended Universe. You have lots of books on the aftermath of the death of the Emperor (especially the Thrawn series) and lots of books on the restoration of the New Jedi order (Yuuzhan Vong invasion), and the aforementioned Legacy of the Force series, which is after the rise of the New Jedi Order.

You can also go ancient. The Darth Bane books are from 1000 years before the Rebellion and The Old Republic books and games are from 3500 years before the Rebellion.

the only reason I don't see them going back thousands of years is that they are completely forfeiting the characters everyone knows, and that is risky. do they really want to bet a $4b acquisition on people buying into a completely different cast of characters with no essentially no relation to the universe people have seen in 6 movies?

agree that they probably want to build a new slate of characters and plot lines, but think it's more likely to come on the heels of the conflict we saw in ROTJ. this is apparently what Lucas had in mind years ago, and my money is on something like 20-40 years after ROTJ being the setting for the new trilogy

this is great news assuming they hire a great writer + director combo. Now if they hire Brett Ratner then it will probably be meh but still better than 1/2/3.

Besides there is so much **** out now a days, I'd happily take a average new star wars over Taken 5

source claims episode 7 is original story, not based on existing books, etc

as one post alluded to above, I'm glad they will come up with a new story. part of the problem with the prequels was knowing exactly how it all turned out ahead of time, so don't want to experience that again.

there are of course plenty of examples of that not being a problem (like Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, etc) but somehow it's different when you think primarily of Star Wars as a movie property, not a book property - so still have that mental block of the books not being "really real"

Just making a list of what's essential for a good Star Wars movie, purely in my opinion and no particular order:
  1. Lightsabers
  2. The force
  3. Laser guns
  4. A simple, good story which people can follow and connect to
  5. Heroes that people care about
  6. Fearsome villains
  7. Aliens, spaceships, and effects that just look cool
  8. Epic classical score

Everything else is negotiable. If done well I think you could completely cut the cord from every character that's ever existed in Episode 1-6 and still make a very good movie. If filmmakers can fit good stories into 100-minute films starting with characters you've never heard of before, why can't a new SW trilogy do it?

For example, you don't necessarily have to go back to the Sith. Instead, maybe they stay extinct and some new bad-guy force people spring up who do things a lot differently. And take the way they took the concept of bounty hunters and made it sci-fi... instead of going back to that well (again), they could rewrite some new occupations into badasses.

People expect a certain thing with Star Wars and I understand that, but upsetting the apple cart a little bit may be what saves the franchise. I don't expect that Disney's looking to tool with a winning formula (revenue-wise), so The Continuing Adventures of Luke Skywalker done completely conventionally wouldn't surprise me.

I think Luke and Leia should appear in cameos as a bridge between the series. Their roles will be to say something profound (leading into main plot points for the movie, ldo), die, and vanish. They would each be like 150 years old, Han is long-dead, no droids, no Chewie, no ****ing Jar Jar.

So, a long time ago... etc, etc

The crawl talks about how there has been peace in the galaxy for over 100 years, the reformed Jedi Council prepares to bid farewell to LUKE SKYWALKER and LEIA SOLO whose time is at an end, and then mention that there have been no Sith heard from since blah blah blah...

Maybe some kind of massive Dark Side disturbance wells up, Luke and Leia are already like Jedi Emeritus, since they're so old, they feel the disturbance in the Force, deliver a couple of lines to the Jedi Council, die, and the movie can kick off.

agree with gonso's last post. i think they go the "safe route" and keep past characters...for now. think we'll get a whole new set of characters many years down the road. wish they'd cut the cord now but don't see it.

This is gong to make so many fan boys angry and it's going to hilarious watching them rage on the Internet about. This is the best decision they could have made and if they can keep up with the good decisions we might actually get a decent star wars movie.
