The way they're doing it allows them to have completely different teams (writers, directors, cast, etc.) working on completely different movies (main storyline, side stories) in parallel, which makes the pace more doable. They can spend 2-3 years on each film and still have one release per year.

Agree with the dumbing down stuff though.

Well yea, the key to doing every year successfully would be that you're handing the reigns to competent creators with some more freedom. It wouldn't have to be that much huger an endeavor than it already is releasing many movies per year as a studio. You could have a small core creative team that keeps things in check.

But yes, they'd need to be taking risks. The path they're on might sadly be the best one from a profit standpoint, until everyone gets sick of the blandness. I'm not sure which risk is more of a concern - the risk of brand dilution from repetitiveness, or the risk of brand dilution from the occasional "My Dinner With Andre on Coruscant" that the mainstream hates.

Obviously Disney/LucasFilm have huge amounts of resources but at some point the task becomes enormous. Also doing great things often times means taking risks, which they don't seem willing to do. If the audience (or more likely their shareholders) would tolerate some duds, I do think you'd have a better chance of getting something truly great and different. Don't think that's where they are headed. There's also some market pressures, that as Star Wars and the movie industry becomes a global phenomenon and you're selling movies everywhere from Cedar Rapids Iowa to Shenzhen China to maximize revenues, you have to sell a movie into all markets. That inevitably means 'dumbing down' to some extent the story, the dialogue, the characters, and upping the action -- stuff that can sell everywhere. It's why we see a big divergence now between commercially successful movies and critically acclaimed ones. Obviously things like some MCU movies and Wonder Woman are notable exceptions but even then artistic decisions are getting made that allow for the film to play in all 4 quadrants on 6 continents or whatever.

So think we are headed for consistent least-common-denominator movies into the future.

tl;dr if they plan to do one ever year, the quality will inevitably suffer or the storytelling bland/repetitive/formulaic, something you can repeat and iterate quickly
Yeah, they almost certainly view it as another MCU money printing machine.

I was going to post that myself, was both hilarious and spot on. Expect many of the things they said (or something like them) to be in the movie.

Colin Trevorrow (he wrote and directed Jurassic World) is out as director/writer for episode 9 and Disney is bringing back Abrams to direct and co-write it.

Ugh. These products are such cluster****s. "Delivered everything we could have hoped for." Yeah a bland safe movie that brought in a billion bucks. Even friends that are massive SW fans the TFA was too safe and forgettable.

I'm really hoping that Disney squanders the massive goodwill of this franchise in spectacular fashion.

To be fair, it was a bland safe movie that brought in two billion bucks.

I think with this decision it's sensible to accept how it's going to be with Star Wars. It wasn't very likely they were going to push the edge with this franchise to begin with (Disney being what they are), but eh I guess it was worth some hope. Either way **** it I'm still in for a ticket when they come out. Someone else is going to have to step up with some new groundbreaking movies and these can just be okay popcorn movies

I feel the "they made 2 billions" argument short sighted.
It's result oriented as **** aswell.
Tell that to ******s executives that ordered the monster cinema universe or other countless failed franchises.
When they fire creative people to make bland movies it bites them in the ass pretty often and can affect their industries in the long run.

Seeing how many people get fired with star wars movies is looking really bad for the franchise when it's the next 2 movies and when you are milking it to the point of talking Jabba the hut stand alone.

A little surprised nobody posted in this thread today.

For those interested who haven't seen it:

Tickets also went on sale. If you want decent seats at a good theater for opening weekend, you should probably go ahead and buy them now, if they're still available.

So basically after remaking ANH while pretending to put put new material they are now remaking ESB while pretending to put out new material. Can't wait for Rey to kill Darth Vader 2.0 in ep 9!

Yeah this is all feeling way too familiar. I guess going the recreation route makes sense tho, old hats will pay regardless and the old formula isn't old for the new generation who'll find it as cool as youngsters did when the originals first dropped.

Star Wars movies are like drugs.

You're never going to get the same buzz you got that first time.

But you're not going to pass up doing that line someone just cut, either.

Also, they used to be a lot better than that **** you get now.
