Preaching on the train Preaching on the train

I was on my work to work this morning tryin to take my usual train ride nap, when I was awoken by a loud sermon. The guy was preaching about how everyone should turn to Jesus and the world is facing an apocolypse... I figured he'd move on after one stop but 3 stops later he was still there right next to me getting more energized as he went on about how everyone should repent or were all going to hell.

Not only could I not get any sleep but I also found this incredibly disrespectful being that I'm jewish and even Christians cant really aprove of this behavier . I wouldn't mind if he did this on the street where I could simply just keep walking, but to be late for work because I had to get off the train to avoid this bozo is out of the question.

I finally had enough and screamed at him to shut up, he didnt seem to hear me so I screamed some more. He was unaffacted and just got louder.

What are my options at this point? Was I right for screaming at him or is this a free speech situation?

I feel like this didn't actually happen at all.

I don't know which subway system this was in, but this happens fairly regularly in the NYC subway. You just have to learn to put your iPod/headphones on and ignore completely, otherwise, you're just giving them bait.

Many Christians consider proselytizing a Christian duty to spread the word of God. To them it's not disrespectful at all, in fact, a lot of proselytizers firmly believe that they're doing you a favor.

You had a better chance of getting him to quiet down if you just approached him. He's probably used to people yelling at him.

Either that or knock him out.

This reminds me of an experience I had in the UK. When I was 17 I went over with a large group of other highschool kids for 3 weeks for this thing called Stuident Ambassadors, pretty worthless but I got to go abroad. But anyway, we were all in the subway and this guy was playing guitar and singing, but some how he found out we were all american and began preaching at us about how terrible we were and that we were causing the world to plummit into chaos and such. Not that I really cared about his verbal attack, but I thought it was ridiculously uncalled for. It made a few of the girls with us cry and we had to get off the train. I've hated public transportation ever since. I'm all for freedom of spech obviously, but no one should be allowed to encroach on the peace of others like that.

I am Christian, and I find this behavior incredibly disrespectful. Furthermore, most of my friends are Christian, and would probably feel the same.

Most of the time, I just ignore these borderline lunatics. But in the OP's case, with the guy right next to him, I would probably nicely ask him to move to a different train car. If he doesn't listen, I would probably move myself.

My apologies for being unclear. I didn't mean to make it seem as though Christians on a whole were this way. In my experience most Christians in the Westernized world are in your boat, and would also feel that subway preacher's actions were disrespectful. I just wanted to state that proselytizing is a tenet of Christianity and there were still a number of Christians who feel strongly about it, who feel that it is their Christian duty. Again, I apologize if I offended anyone.

Heh, I wasn't offended.

I'm just saying that there is a time and a place for proselytizing, and I highly doubt that force-feeding a sermon to a pissed off audience is what the Christian leaders who created the tenet really had in mind. Although I know little on the subject, I'm sure there is a much less offensive tactic to reaching their target audience, and I assume that most Christians (and non-Christians) would likely agree with me.

I'm a Christian too and there is no way this is normal and promoted behavior in 99% of Christian churches.

Having religion shoved down my throat while this bum probably lives of my tax dollars.

Can someone tell me where the ownage is in that video? All three of them seem foolish to me. I feel like I may as well be watching Trekkies arguing over what's better: original Star Trek or Star Trek The Next Generation.

Surely the best thing to do is to start foaming at the mouth, blaspheming in many voices, writhing around generally act like you're posessed. He's either going to **** himself and run or attempt an excorcism on the spot - either way you win. Magnificent entertainment!

I read this thread earlier and thought a little about it and I couldnt come up with much that would be really effective in stopping this guy and wouldnt end up being violent or just in appropriate other then just asking the guy nicely to take it somewhere else. Dont know how effective it would be though.
