Anyone else think the ending was a gyp, or was it brilliant and I'm too obtuse to realize it?
When Roland gets to the Tower, what he finds inside is the story of his own life, because the literal Dark Tower is a symbol for the seven book saga called The Dark Tower. Roland's quest to get to the Tower is a metafictional representation of King's own writing career. That's why almost all of his previous books to that point get woven in. He is as good as he is because he is completely obsessed by it, and it got him addicted to drugs and hurt a lot of people around him. But with their love and support, he finally finished.
After Roland found the tower, he stepped through into another iteration of his story. After Stephen King finished writing The Dark Tower, he started working on his next book. There is no end to Roland's quest, just as Stephen King will never stop writing. There will always be another tale to tell, and one must take the lessons learned in the telling of each to make the next ones better.
