I do agree that if the movie were a sequel to what we've already read, I'd be crazy with anticipation.
If it is a sequel it should still be almost entirely the same as what we read.

I hope it does well, creates a franchise and allows for a flashback story with Roland/Alain/Jamie/Cuthbert

That'd be what I hope for, too. Probably like to see it as like a third movie, but I'd love to see the whole Jonas / Rhea storyline play out on screen. Or Cort! Gimme some Cort!

I think I saw that the budget was $60M, so it's not a super high bar to hurdle, which bodes well for future installments.

Ha! That's so true. I must've temporarily forgotten how the epic saga ended, though I don't know how I could've. The ending pissed me off SO MUCH.

Anyone else think the ending was a gyp, or was it brilliant and I'm too obtuse to realize it?

Are we spoilering book ending stuff or not? Just in case, for this post I will continue to.

Not necessarily right?

Spoiler:
I could be wrong, but I don't remember there being any evidence to suggest that each cycle is very similar to some arbitrary degree. And in absence of that evidence, I'd say pretty much anything can be different, even a 2 person ka-tet instead of 4. Butterfly effect and all...

Some parts were awful, some I was ok with.

Spoiler:
I'm ok with the cycle thing in THEORY, but I didn't like that it didn't really seem to take a stance on what the cycles actually meant - if it was Roland's nature to just repeat forever, or if he was iterating to something final, or what. Yes, I would have preferred a much cooler/cleaner ending, but if this cycle thing was done better I would've given it a 9/10. As it was, it left me with a 7/10. And a 7/10 is not good enough for epic/magnum opus (or whatever you call it)/best series ever caliber books - from what I was led to believe - from such an extraordinarily accomplished author.

2 things I was NOT ok with and thing were a complete travesty:
1) The death of the Man in Black. WTF. Need I say more?
2) The whole BS thing with the Crimson King battle??? OMG that was painful. I don't think I need to say any more on this front either.

These two things were particularly upsetting because of their supposed importances in the mythos as well as how much buildup there was over the course of the series.

(also the whole Mordred thing was terrible and could've been completely removed)

I remember liking the very end, but I'm ambivalent about the denouement with the Crimson King and all that. The ending seems pretty polarizing.

Spoiler:
I hated the cycle ending. After all that he starts again? I mean I get that "ka" is a wheel that keeps on rolling but it still blew my mind. Also, I could've done without Mordred, only because his ending was so anticlimantic and had nothing to do with anything significant.

+1 about wanting more Cort! Also, I want to see Eddie's naked gunfight during his drawing with Andolini! It's been so long since I've read some of the books, it's time for a re-visit.

Yes, gyp is a diminutive of gypsy. I prefer to think of it as not politically correct, rather than a racial slur.

I've tried to remove words such as this from my vocab, as well as 'indian giver' and 'ghey', but 'gyp' just felt like the correct word to convey how I strongly I felt about the ending.

I certainly didn't intend to offend you or anyone of Romani heritage. Ironically, this reminds me of another King book turned movie, Thinner!

Huh, never knew that. I guess I could've put two and two together.... I would guess that fewer than 20% of gentiles know it's a pejorative, as every time I've ever heard it used I've never perceived any sort of racist intent. More likely I'm just daft, though.

Rats! That was the word I wanted to use; 'pejorative' not diminutive.

As much as I love the Book 1 storyline, I think it's a jarring jump from that into Book 2's heavy focus on other worlds and new characters so sticking directly to the story would be tougher in the movie.

That said, MAJOR SPOILER ALERT DO NOT CLICK IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE BOOKS

Spoiler:
As long as Jake dies in the end I'll be very hopeful for the next iterations.

And yes, I totally need a Young Roland mini-series or two. Bring the Wire kids back together for it.

I didn't think the ending itself was awful (didn't particularly like it though) but I have never, in my life, felt as let down overall by any series (book, tv, movie, whatever) as this one. The first 3 books were so good and the last 3 were so bad it was just a baffling trainwreck. 4th book was ok.

Why not just say you were jewed out of the ending?

Sorry for the derail everyone!

OMFG

Do not say you are sorry when you most assuredly are not.

I wouldn't say I was "Jewed out" because I have never heard or used that phrase in my life.

Best part about young ka-tet movie would be stashing guns in favor of bow/slingshot and having young audiences claim a hunger games ripoff!

When Roland gets to the Tower, what he finds inside is the story of his own life, because the literal Dark Tower is a symbol for the seven book saga called The Dark Tower. Roland's quest to get to the Tower is a metafictional representation of King's own writing career. That's why almost all of his previous books to that point get woven in. He is as good as he is because he is completely obsessed by it, and it got him addicted to drugs and hurt a lot of people around him. But with their love and support, he finally finished.

After Roland found the tower, he stepped through into another iteration of his story. After Stephen King finished writing The Dark Tower, he started working on his next book. There is no end to Roland's quest, just as Stephen King will never stop writing. There will always be another tale to tell, and one must take the lessons learned in the telling of each to make the next ones better.

The first book of the series I'd in my opinion among kings best works. But especially the last few books are just like most of his works not very good.

I have pretty much the opposite opinion, especially after rereading The Gunslinger. I think that book's fairly sloppy and doesn't do much but establish the MiB / Gunslinger dynamic and set the table for the rest of the series. Second and third books are easily among King's best. I do agree that the last three books seem banged out like he just wanted to make sure he finished the series before he died or something like that.

Wow. I didn't realize it was a metaphor of King's writing career but this makes complete sense (and I love when things make sense). BTW I had to read your last sentence three times to fully digest it but spot on.

The Drawing of the Three is easily my favorite book of the series.

Spoiler:
Apparently my favorite book isn't making the cut if Eddie and Susannah aren't cast in the movie. Whores! I want my lobstrosities! I wonder whether or not Roland will be missing a couple of fingers from his right hand in the movie.

No shots of him in the trailer have him missing fingers. I would strongly doubt it.

If I remember correctly the gunslinger is a very early work of his I think it was written years before the second book which probably explains the different tone.
I would agree that it is a bit unpolished it just drew me in like a book rarely does. I really like the gritty feel and at times could almost taste the dusty wind.
