Make your own. It tastes way better and has a better consistency. Put some sundried tomatoes in that ****.

Loss of Jerod Mayo is apparently having ripple effects far beyond the New England Patriots' linebacking corps.

For the recipe change theory to be true, there would have to be both impetus for the change in the first place and then a willful disregard for a change in the flavor profile. It's just super doubtful that's the case.

The "New Coke" analogy isn't quite proper because there was an expected change to the flavor profile with that, it just wasn't a popular one. If the unwashed masses are truly noticing a flavor difference then I'm sure the sensory panel at Hellman's would have too, which makes me pretty dubious there's any change at all. 60 internet reviews is hardly much of a sample. If 10 million people eat mayo, and 1% of them eat it enough to notice flavor changes, and 1% of THEM care enough to review mayo, then 60 reviews is 6% that don't like the "change." Think about how conservative each of those assumptions is and you're looking at a miniscule sample of people that are, most likely, nuts.
The link of reviews I posted in opening op is Hellman Mayonnaise home review portal. The reviews seem to go back 10 months. The total amount of people that cared to review Hellmans Mayonaise was 120 or so. 60 of those people noticed a significant change for the worse in the product. 60 people thought hellmans was the absolute nuts. Of the 60 people that noticed a taste for the worse almost all stated they would no longer buy the product.

You are disregarding the sample that thought Hellmans is still the nuts. I am wondering if you actually clicked on the link I provided as you left out the half sample that thought Hellmans was the nuts. Unilever the mgmt and producers of Hellmans came in to a lot of the negative reviews to express concern over consumers who didn't like the product.

I find it interesting that in not one of the threads that got a negative review did mgmt vehemently deny that there has been no change to the ingredients and the product was of the same excellence it has always been. Wouldn't it be plausible that mgmt would vigorously defend that the brand was unchanged and the malcontents in the thread had just gotten a bad batch?

I think it's probably either something to do with a change of ingredient supplier or more likely the missing freshness seal. Have you bought multiple jars without a freshness seal? If not, seems probable that a batch went out without seals which would account for a much inferior product.

People in the review thread who don't like the change seem to think its the olive oil being used.

I believe hellmans no longer uses a protective seal. It was mentioned by a few people in the review thread I linked that they no longer use it. I noticed this right away also. I actually thought my jar was possibly contaminated because there was no protective seal. I don't know if Hellmans doesn't use a protective seal for certain but I believe they went this route after having a protective seal.

Since we now have a mayo thread, here's one of my all-time favorite condiments:

1 cup mayo
2 T minced canned chipotle chiles in adobo
2 T frozen orange juice concentrate (if you use regular OJ, you need more to get the same level of flavor, and then your mayo is too runny.)

This just further proves that these "people in the review thread" are not credible. In regular Hellmans there IS NO OLIVE OIL. I posted the ingredient list before:

SOYBEAN OIL, WATER, WHOLE EGGS AND EGG YOLKS, VINEGAR, SALT, SUGAR, LEMON JUICE, CALCIUM DISODIUM EDTA (USED TO PROTECT QUALITY), NATURAL FLAVORS. GLUTEN-FREE.

The only hellmans w/ olive oil is the one that specifically says "made with olive oil".

Looks like Hellman's has been transitioning to cage free eggs in their mayo, sourcing from brand new egg supplier.

Haven't noticed a change and hope not too. We don't use much mayo but Hellman's is the only store-bought mayo we've ever used. Any noticeable change would have us looking at other brands, as opposed to just buying Hellman's without thinking about it for the next 40 years. Maybe that's not a bad thing.

Speaking of mayo, the Star-Kist brand canned albacore tuna is completely ****ed now. It's disgusting. Details on the Googles.

EDIT: Actually here are photos I took at a time. Compared two cans of Star-Kist versus the generic store brand I ran out and bought. I wish you could smell the difference. It was mush and completely disgusting. Something to do with Star-Kist tuna being sold to a Korean company or whatever I don't know.

Spoiler:

Tuna is probably 40% of our household's mayo use so maybe it's a relevant PSA for the thread. Canned tuna is usually canned tuna but lol don't buy Star-Kist.

So I too just bought some Hellman's and found there was no seal. I didn't notice anything off putting with the taste... I wonder if we have some placebo effect taking place where people think the loss of the seal will affect the flavor and hence they just think it tastes different.

You need to scour your area for stores that still have jars with the protective seal and stock up. If the formula is changed you want to hang on as long as possible to the old one.

Whatever you do, don't buy Miracle Whip thinking it might be a suitable replacement.

Miracle Whip is some kind of fake almost-mayonnaise right?

Z, You on any new medications? Start or stop smoking? This could be the first sign of a brain tumor. Death by mayonnaise, could be a first.

Thanks for the googling skills. Eggs are a huge part of mayo obv and could definitely impact the flavor.

OP, did your bad tasting mayo have the humane seal mentioned in the links?

No new medications or any medications unfortunately , I don't smoke so my taste buds were not altereed in any way.
The bottle only had the plastic clear seal around the screw on cap.

I've thought about this, but what's the shelf life? I've always assumed it's a use-immediately kind of thing.

Well you don't have to make much and it'll last a week or two in fridge. Takes five minutes to make.

Nothing like getting a perfect can of tuna. I trust Bumble Bee solid white albacore in water:

Also, FTR Miracle Whip is a dressing.

Ok guys. Apparently store sold me 30 ounce bottle with expiration date of 2013. Going to be checking the dates carefully from now on. Thankfully didn't get food poisoning or anything. With regard to the seal, the freshness seal only comes with bottles that are more then 30 oz mine was a 30 oz bottle.

I am satisfied that the issue was past due expiration date. I am just thankful I don't have to change brands. Really relieved with thanksgiving coming up and all. First time something like this has happened in 20 years. Will def be checking expiration dates from now on.

Lol, so this whole thread was simply because you didn't check the date? Can't speak for others, but if something in a jar, can, etc doesn't taste right, the first thing I'm doing is checking the date.

But I'm glad you won't have to switch brands OP. Change sucks sometimes.
