I am a long time purchaser of Hellmans mayonnaise. In all the years I have been buying Hellmans I have never gotten anything but a fresh tasting superior product. The last bottle I got had a strange nasty after taste definitely not fresh tasting. I thought hmmm that is odd and didn't think anything of it.

I made a sandwich the other day and the same awful after taste. I decided to google to see if anyone else noticed the same thing . I even looked at the bottle to see if I didn't buy cholesterol free, nope the regular brand.

http://www.hellmanns.com/product/det...eal-mayonnaise

Apparently Hellmans changed the recipe and didn't tell anyone. Looks like they are still not telling anyone in the thread. I wonder if it was to cut costs. I threw out the rest of the bottle and am really pissed. Hellmans was the best mayo by far. Unreal that they would try and cut costs. People started noticing 80 days ago in the thread. I am guessing the change in recipe just hit my region.

You buy more than one jar of mayonnaise every 80 days?

I said that the reviews where 80 days old. Looking back its mixed reviews with some being from a few days ago. People are definitely noticing though. I just recently opened a new bottle and noticed the huge difference in taste. 80 days ? I buy a new bottle weekly bro. Just really disappointing as was by far the best mayo hands down. Kraft is awful . I also noticed there is no longer a protective seal. I honestly thought it had been tampered with but that isn't the case.

Guess I will be going with Guldens.

Does your monthly mayonnaise budget exceed your monthly olive oil budget?

I work in a manufacturing field and I honestly highly, highly doubt they would have changed the formula (why would they? their product is widely regarded as the best on the market).

It's more likely that there was a seasonal variation in a material used, or they added an additional egg supplier during a capacity crunch that used different feed.

Also possible they had a batch (or multiples) that didn't meet specifications but decided to use it anyway. This happens sometimes because the huge vats of product have pretty significant dollar values that they'd rather not scrap and figured the average consumer wouldn't notice.

Funny I did notice the last two jars had a more watery consistency, but chalked it up to my refrigerator dying.

Now I know the real problem is FU Hellman's Mayonnaise.

That is why I googled , all those people in thread I attached who have noticed the difference in taste can't be wrong can they? People have noticed a change in the taste from 10 months ago until recently if you check the reviews. I have never had a bad bottle of Hellmans in years and years. I don't think ive tried Miracle Whip, will give it a try.

Good luck with that. A lot of people I know, me included, who are used to regular mayonnaise can't stand Miracle Whip.

Best Foods is exactly the same as Hellmann's, just west of the Rockies, right? Haven't bought a jar for a while but next time I'll be on the lookout to see if it tastes weird now.

There seems to be some confirmation that they changed the recipe a bit around 2005/2006. Not sure about a more recent change.

if someone likes mayonnaise enough that they go through jars consistently they are definitely not going to enjoy miracle whip in the same context imo

I mean, that's hardly a confirmation. Just because that lady said she got a response saying they've changed it, does that make it true? The people who work in CS answering those emails certainly don't know the details. It would make a lot more sense to adjust the COGS by reducing the package size, which she noted they had already done.

It's also a very common psychology to notice 1 change (package size) and assume another (formula). I used to make a mentholated hand cream for a naturals company. It was mint green. At one point, they decided that the green dye used didn't fit within the 'naturals' branding, so they removed the green dye, which was in the formula at 0.01%. I can't count the number of customer complaints they got about 'changing the formula' and that the product didn't work anymore.

Since I am Dutch and we drown our fries in mayonnaise, I recently did some research on what was considered the best brand. Hellman's came out on top in a taste test with Dutch chefs, so I have been quite eager to try it. I agree with OP, this is horrible.

Did you read the link I attached? It was more then one lady . Imagine all the people that didn't complain. All the complaints had the same issues that I had. Thread goes back 10 months with half of reviews noticing a significant change. I believe they changed the recipe to most likely cut costs hoping no one would notice. Happened with other products no?

Again, I doubt they would change the recipe, especially not to cut costs. More likely to change size or increase price. They have an established brand, they are the best mayo out there. Can you come up with a real reason why they would jeopardize that?

One of the main reasons to change a formula is because an ingredient is discontinued. I doubt this is the case for mayo - not so many ingredients, and I doubt any of them have been discontinued.

Googling for 'hellmans changed the recipe!!!' is confirmation bias. Why don't you email the company yourself?
