How do they not catch crooks like that? They have to show ID to board the plane, and go through Customs. I guess they could have a really good fake. Or do they just count on nobody in LE giving a crap?

They aren't the ones who board the plane...

Edit: Or they purchase it at the last minute

SOMEBODY boards the plane. Why aren't they getting busted? They have a relationship with the thief. Air Jamaica flights are randomly sold on ebay.

Busted for what? Wanting to fly for cheap?

What type of relationship? random person buying tickets for a random person?

I think you accidentally a word there (or being sarcastic) so if you meant they aren't being sold you're right, TICKETS are not being sold on ebay.

OP, how old are you?

Credit card companies themselves have been hacked and had all their customers info stolen, so even if you had a card and never used it, its possible for this to happen.

So basically, just check your statements, and dont waste your time by deleting it from amazon profile (lol), and dont worry about it, cuz it will be reimbursed, its not worth the time or hassle to try and keep it safe and secure because the only way to ensure that is to basically never use it, and even then you cant guarantee the issuing company wont be hacked or your card number just be brute forced

This happened to me when I was travelling around Europe.

I was in Dresden, Germany trying to withdraw money from an ATM when I was declined saying that I had no money left in the account. I thought that was bull**** as I knew I still had enough money in there to at least cover what I wanted to withdraw.

Anyway, it turned out that my details were stolen in Venice a couple of days prior when I was using an ATM there (along with 3 others in the same tourist group and probably countless others) and they were then quickly used in some location in South America to clean my account out - only like 250 Euros but still..

So when I returned to London which was the start and finish location of my tour I went to my Australian bank's office there and all I had to do was provide proof that I was in Italy and not in South America where I lost my money. So I just provided my itinerary and got the money refunded - only **** thing was that the bank wanted me to pay a fee to replace the credit card despite not being my fault that my details were stolen.

It's the merchant's responsibility to collect money from you before they let you leave with their merchandise. If they're willing to accept checks and credit cards as a convenience to their customers, then they must be satisfied you are who you say they are before letting you leave with their merchandise. It's the merchant's responsibility to take proper measures to ensure they are not giving their products away for free.

OP,

I'm curious how you use your card daily. You really haven't stated.

Restaurant?
Gas pump?
ATM?
Grocery stores?
Department stores?

All of these are far more riskier than saving your encrypted card number on Amazon. They already have it stored when you made your purchase and keep it on file.

Since you probably don't know what a skimmer is I took a second to Google for you, and this video explains it well: http://abcnews.go.com/Nightline/vide...mmers-20102140

Bump

Just had a fraudulent charge for the first time for $155 at Outback. Prior to yesterday I had only used my card at Amazon and coinbase this month so I'm 99% certain my card info was stolen at McDonalds yesterday. I already talked to Chase but I'm wondering if there's something else I can do?

Isn't the chip suppose to prevent this?

Call your cc owner and deny all charges obv. I would suspect Amazon more than McD to be honest.

Dunno about the chip. The best defense is to realize that everything can and will be hacked. You just need to minimize your points of vulnerability.

+100 rep points to searching and bumping this thread instead of making a new one or burying it in the lc thread.

Was it a local Outback or one from a random part of the country. If local, I say it was stolen from your use of the actual card. If it was not local then I suspect it was an internet theft.

If that outback doesn't have a chip reader machine then it does nothing

I assume they used online ordering.

New tech has made cloning ridiculously easy. As said a few posts up, it's not a matter of "if" your card gets compromised.

It will happen occasionally, minimize your vulnerability as best you can (sounds like you did). When it does, notify your cc company immediately, some even have a feature to disable the card from a mobile app. Chances of you being held responsible for the charge is 0%.

Chip protects you at POS terminals because it creates a one-time token similar to Apple Pay instead of giving the terminal your card number. Chip does nothing for online purchases as you are providing your card number.

It was used in Florida, live in CA. Not sure if that's correct though. Seems like they can easily transfer the info. Saved my info to Amazon and coinbase months ago and am super careful when it comes to using it online.

Chip cards are really not any more secure than standard non-chip cards in most situations.

I had a card converted from a closed account. The new numbered-card never left my house, never made an online purchase, never was stored online anywhere, etc. I didn't use it once for the first 4 months, and then hackers attempted to use it for some overseas airline tickets. My cc company caught it within 10 minutes, before I even noticed the email alert I had set up for any cc activity on it. I'm pretty sure there are hackers out there that get access to credit card info without even needing to skim your specific number, ie. rogue employee selling a database online, hacker breaking into the cc database, etc.
