another way to steal info without elite hacking skills is to attach a skimmer to an atm or gas pump card reader.

I used google to look up the name. That's it. It was just a question. Was just curious to see if anyone here has been there personally.

Often. Decent store and the place I use for most commercial food buys. They are all over the valley, some in sketcher locations than others.

Capital One is very good at reimbursing for unknown/fraudulent charges. I've been a customer of theirs for years, and I recently realized I had been charged a small amount, monthly, for almost 3 years from an unknown company. CO connected me with company after inquiring about charges, and after finding out I had been unknowingly signed up for service (fraud protection type deal from 3rd party company), they reimbursed me quickly without question.

Had someone pass 3 checks (the ones they send when they are trying to get you to transfer/get some quick cash on your existing CC) at the same ShopRite within 24 hours once. Fraud people all but confirmed they were lifted from your trash and someone at the store was in on it (OK'd them all). Tear those things up before you trash them.

This has happened to me three times in the past 5-6 years. Check your balances daily. It doesn't take long to get reimbursed and get a new card.

Amazon saves your card information for future use. As do other websites like amazon.

After I make a purchase, I delete it from my profile.

I fail to see why that's funny.

Because it is not really an effective deterrent to identity theft.

Your outrage is amusing because it fails to recognize that this is a completely standard problem. Checking your bank acct to ensure that there are no erroneous charges is step one in preventing fraud. You did that. If you hadn't, the bank probably would have caught it. Either way it's a minor inconvenience that is significantly lessened in your case since you are apparently highly conscious of not having credit card information stored online. Because imo the biggest PITA about the whole thing is having to re-type cc info into all the online billing sites, hulu, amazon, netflix, etc. etc.

I just don't like the thought of my credit card number being saved, that's all. I want to use it and be done with it, not have it "saved" on the website for the future. It makes me feel better.

lol AUG

Anyway, this happened to me a few months ago. Someone charged $200 at a Wal-Mart in Central Florida while I was constantly using the same card while bar hopping in New Orleans, which is standard. Chase called me, asked if I had made the charges, and then wiped it all off my card. Told me it was duplicated somewhere and was pretty random/unavoidable and then overnighted me a new credit card. Even gave me a nice prepaid return envelope to mail them my old card for proper destruction.

I would think having your credit card information stolen or having your identity compromised would be a bigger pain in the ass, but ok, got it.

God forbid I have to punch in a few numbers any time I want to buy something online...which isn't really that often for me.

Do you use your CC at bars or other places where your CC is out of your sight for 10 seconds?

AUG,

"I fail to see why that's funny."

Not saving your credit card info on sites you are going to use more than once after ALREADY GIVING THEM ALL YOUR INFO is just LOLOLOLOLOLOL, especially because I bet you do stuff like use your credit card to pay at restaurants and grocery stores and stuff.

Trying to "protect" yourself by not saving your CC info at Amazon is just about the most clueless "strategy" possible, which makes it just super loltastic.

So what's funny is your absolute cluelessness in doing pain in the ass stuff with basically no benefit to you at all, while probably not even utilizing stuff like temporary CC #s.

Had a credit card issue over Christmas last year that I hadn't heard about, but is apparently all the rage with credit card thieves: there is apparently a computer program that mass-simulates credit card numbers and tries to charge small amounts to the created number. Once there is a hit they use the number to make online purchases. Chase called me up when there was a $1.20 charge from some random European company. Weird thing is going back through my statements there was an .80 charge a month earlier from the same company that Chase didn't catch.

I work for a major bank/card issuer and hear these types of things happening everyday at the water cooler. 90% of our 'fraud' cases are not fraud at all but family members using card, too drunk to remember ordering hookers or cardholders thinking they can pull a fast one.Biggest threats of having card number compromised are:
- Batches from hackers. Basically lists of card numbers/exp from sloppy merchants not protecting their customers.
- Random authorization batches. Basically hacker trying millions of card numbers and hoping to get a couple $1 preauths. They will then sell these numbers which will be cloned or used online.
- Raised numbers on a card allows cashier, waitress, etc to get a quick imprint with a piece of paper. Our cards do not have raised numbers for this reason.
- Cloning through gas pumps/ATMs is HUGE!
Our security team is insane staying 2 steps ahead of fraudsters. It might create a hassle for a couple days but if it truly is fraud, money will be credited and new card will be sent. If you ever get a random new card in the mail, call from a fraud team or card getting restricted... Be thankful as a fraud team prevented it before it happened.

Grunching from OP, so apologies if I'm piling on.

How did you get to adulthood, not to mention five years in OOT, without hearing about credit card fraud, skimmers, card printing, etc, etc??

Your mind is going to be blown when you find about Enron, human trafficking, the Italian Mafia, and hackers!
