Ah, I did not know that. I listen to Drive By Truckers occasionally. "Outfit" is terrific--I've actually tried to use it to help educate my teenager!

Edit: I found the YouTube clip. I had already seen that episode of ACL a couple of times. Just didn't know what I was watching. Thanks!

Trying to educate a teenager about music? Good luck with that!

He's a music maniac. He has taught himself to play guitar and keyboards. For Christmas this year he requested a banjo, which, of course, he is getting. One of my proudest moments as a parent!

His music collection has already dwarfed mine. And I can't even criticize his taste too much. But I do wish his tastes were more aligned with mine so I could do some heavy borrowing

It's tough to enjoy contry music with all of the bullsh*t music that comes out of Nashville these days (Luke Bryan, Florida Georgia line). And it doesn't help that these songs are blasted all over the radios. I would highly suggest any type of Texas country music and I think you'll find it is much better. I'll just kill it with a list of my favorite bands/singers below.

Aaron Watson
Brandon Rhyder
Casey Danahew Band
Charlie Robison
Cory Morrow
Cross Canadian Ragweed
Curtis Grimes
Deryl Dodd
George Strait
Josh Abbott Band
Kasey Musgraves
Kyle Park
Kevin Fowler
Micky & the Motorcars
Pat Green
Randy Rogers Band
Roger Creager
Reckless Kelly
Robert Earl Keen
Rob Baird
Turnpike Troubadours
Wade Bowen
William Clark Green

it's a shame we don't hear most itt on the radio. i'm terrible at the internet and i'm pretty confident that if i hadn't randomly seen sturgill on letterman, i probably would have 0 clue who he was.

Thanks for introducing him into this thread. I added You Can Have the Crown to my playlist on my phone. Radio sucks. I haven't listened to an over-the-air station in > 10 years except for brief trips in my car where I don't want to bother with my phone.

I missed the second reference my first time through, but coincidentally (?) downloaded Live Oak to my phone.

Thanks again to everyone for the heads-up. I'll be listening to quite a bit of music that I was unaware of previously.

I can't upsell Jason Isbell enough. It's crazy how much I listen to Southeastern. His interview with Marc Maron was great. This link jumps to his performance of Elephant, but the whole podcast is also worth a listen:

I also think this is kind of fun:

Jason Isbell performing Danko/Manuel on ACL. Great singer songwriter and shows off a pretty mean slide guitar.

And here singing Live Oak with his wife, the exquisite Amanda Shires.

I keep forgetting how good Isbell is for some reason. Had no idea he could play slide like that.

I find it hard to listen to Southeastern because it's such a depressing record. It's great, but kind of a black hole that you fear is going to suck you in.

Drinking whisky at a buddy's house at 5am when this track came on sparked a country music binge for me.

Lucero - Drink Til We're Gone

Also, definite agreement with Drive By Truckers and Zac Brown Band. The latter is closer to pop-country, but still downright good music.

I don't like country music but I really liked a CD by Mindy Smith back in 2003 or so. She did a version of Joellene on it. She wasn't twangy at all.

Also, Shane Nicholson is a great country singer from Down Under, he's great.

i dont like country, least favorite genre next to talentless rap (I like some good rap but rock/electronic mostly) but this song and the cds i looked into because of it are extremely intriguing to me

Steve Earle doing an excellent rendition of Guy Clark's "The Last Gunfighter Ballad."

Chris Knight is awesome and relatively unheralded. John Prine is also great but fairly famous now.

Oh you posted Robert Earl Keen too, he's the best. Aggie btw, gig them.

Corpus Christi Bay - Robert Earl Keen

Listening to REK is what led me down this path to what I think is awesome music. I went to see him one night at Ziggy's in Winston-Salem, NC, and Kasey Chambers opened for him -- fell in love with her music instantly.

Here are a couple more along these lines:

Charlie Robison -- My Hometown

I know this was posted earlier, but this is with Kelly Willis harmonizing -- Natalie Maines - Travelin' Soldier

Some names missing from the various lists I've seen ITT - a few that come to mind:

Ray Wylie Hubbard - some of the best texas blues you'll ever hear on multiple albums (the casual music fan may remember "Up Against the Wall Red Neck Mother" but that is the least of his music).

Steve Earle

Mary Gauthier

Townes Van Zandt (some would say one of the GOAT country song writers)

Alexander Escovedo (could say his music is more R&R)

Guy Clark

Joe Ely

and many more. You can hear some of the best alt.country sounds on XM channel 60 "Outlaw Country"

Steve Earle's Guitar Town album is one of the greatest country albums evaa. I still listen to it. A friend of mine has a theory that Earle went soft after he got out of prison and kicked the heroin. Probably not true.

I also like Ray Wylie Hubbard and Townes a lot. Here's a different type of country song.
