In the spirit of these, check out Justin Townes Earle, Steve's son, namesake of Townes van Zandt

I enjoy DBT too. Check out Truckers' defect Jason Isbell, his solo stuff is pretty good too. This kind of stuff is pretty much as far "country" as I go, but I like how Jason describes his work, "can be a little southern sometimes, thank God"

A little country, a little rock and roll. Like Aerosmith with a can of Skoal.

Neil Young's latest stuff can be considered country too, I think.

what a dumbass thread. theres no country music that someone who DOESNT LIKE COUNTRY MUSIC is going to like. because if i liked it, i would not still dislike country music. and i will dislike all country music no matter what. i am a firm believer of this. **** op.

Really? Have you listened to all the links in this thread and made an informed decision, or are you saying this because you can't stand Tim McGraw and Faith Hill so you just assume all country music is like this?

I don't normally listen to hip-hop, but I'd be an idiot to say "all hip-hop is awful and I will never like any of it."

Your asinine comment just shows how incredibly narrow-minded and stupid you are.

Kind of. But most country music is very pop and very "well I opened up my mason jar, missed my dog, hate my ex wife" etc. crap and I actually hate 99% of country music (random percentage ftw) but there are some really good singer songwriters in the country vein that I do like and will always like.

So, the thread title should be "good country for people that don't like bull**** cliche lame ass same **** over and over country."

Though to be honest I haven't really checked out many of the links in the thread so I don't know if that title even fits.

So Untrue. When artists like Shania Twain, Rascal flats, Keith Urban came out over the years they converted many

None of the artists mentioned are country, so what did they convert so many to? Wearing a cowboy hat and having a slide guitar or fiddle in the band doesnt necessarily mean country music.

And I completely agree with The Donator that the vast majority of country music is uncreative both lyrically and musically. Its gotten much worse in recent years, every female singer sounds the same and most males do too.

This kind of rhetoric is for those lacking fundamental understanding of musicology.

And what other genre of music can claim otherwise? If you don't like country, that's fine, but don't pretend to know it as well as the genres of music you do like.

I don't know what you have been exposed to but Country is just like every other genrre, the majority is watered-down, commercial and brain dead but there is a layer beneath the popular radio that contains substance.

I mean, this site has threads dedicated to indie music constantly--well, if you were to turn on your local rock station you wouldn't find Neutral Milk Hotel...ever. The problem is that the country music people associate country music with is that ****ty FM pop cheese crap.

So is trolling, which seems to be all you've got.

One of my favorites is Robbie Fulks, does a wide variety of stuff, some very funny, some just traditional country and some rockish country, some links

As someone who was raised on older country music, including the likes of Ray Charles and others not generally thought of as country, there's only so much I can tolerate. My dad has moved on and embraced the pop/country that dominates the country charts today, but I can't really take it. I'm a big fan of lo-fi indie so my tastes run in that direction.

Here's what's currently on my iPhone:

Willie Nelson-Red Headed Stranger. If you like concept albums, there is none better. Hear Willie's Martin N20 "Trigger" in all it's glory.

Johnny Cash-American Recordings. Johnny Cash and his guitar. Covering the likes of Kris Kristofferson, Glen Danzig and others with some great originals.

Johnny Cash-Unchained. This time with a backup band known as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Includes old songs that never got finished, new material, an old classic and a Chris Cornell cover among others. Cash's voice is in great form on both albums and doesn't suffer from his age.

Lucinda Williams-Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. Not old timey country, but not the kind you hear on the radio either. I just got it and only listened to it a couple times. So far I like it because it seems different. She has a great, confident voice.

O Brother, Where Art Thou Soundtrack- Soggy Bottom Boys, et. al ftw.

Obviously, some people are so immensely talented, they should be recognized for it regardless of their type of music.

I consider Johnny Horton (1925-1960) to be one of those people. When I was a kid, my parents listened to country music. So, I naturally didn't like it. However, even as a 7 year old, I liked Horton.

My favorite (then and now):
Sink the Bismark

Probably his most famous:
The Battle of New Orleans

Others:
Johnny Reb

North to Alaska

Springtime in Alaska

Whispering Pines

Honky Tonk Man
