Apple Music made it really easy to listen to a ton of bands in this thread. Have heard stuff I liked by many of the bands mentioned (Drive by Truckers, Old 97s, John Prine, Old Crow Medicine Show, Whiskeytown, The Avett Brothers come to mind), mostly in the alt-country and americana categories - I like that I can enjoy a song, then find some playlist it's on and discover other music. One band that I don't think was mentioned that I seem to like everything from is The Jawhawks. Also a bunch of music that doesn't really belong in this thread but seems to have a lot of country influence, like the Handsome Family, Mountain Goats, and Pavement.

I like the Bottle Rockets, Missouri group. This one rocks a little, but they're often compared to Woody Guthrie for their folky hick musical stylings. Very smart lyrics. Their darker songs are somewhat Zevonesque.

Turns out that Lo-Fi is a genre of music that I enjoy very much. Seems to be a lot of overlap with the kind of alt-country/americana I like. Today I discovered Jason Molina / Songs: Ohia / The Magnolia Electric Co:

Enjoying Richard Buckner lately.

Richard Buckner's first album "Bloomed" I nearly wore out by playing so much. Reminded me of a cross between TVZ and Uncle Tupelo.

Subsequent releases seemed a little hit and miss to me. And I have not really followed his stuff in recent years.

But these are good songs ^

I'll just kill it with a list of my favorite bands/singers below.

Aaron Watson
Brandon Rhyder
Casey Danahew Band
Charlie Robison
Cory Morrow
Cross Canadian Ragweed
Curtis Grimes
Deryl Dodd
George Strait
Josh Abbott Band
Kasey Musgraves
Kyle Park
Kevin Fowler
Micky & the Motorcars
Pat Green
Randy Rogers Band
Roger Creager
Reckless Kelly
Robert Earl Keen
Rob Baird
Turnpike Troubadours
Wade Bowen
William Clark Green
Good list. For people who don't think they like country, I always start them out with the more southern rock type of bands like Reckless Kelly and Micky & the Motorcars.

Personally, my favorites from your list are William Clark Green and Reckless KElly.

Some others that aren't as well known that are great are Rob Baird, Parker McCollum, and Adam Hood.

Been listening to a few Youtube mixes recently to get me into some different artists.

Really enjoying this one at the moment.

There's a "memorial" up on U Tube. Don't know if this link will work:

Tribute was nicely done. Thanks for posting the link.

I saw him play in Kerrville quite a few times. A couple of weeks ago my wife finally heard me listen to enough of his music that she got an overwhelming urge to track down his schedule because she wanted to go see him. Instead of finding his schedule she found out he was terminally ill. He was supposed to close the Kerrville Folk Festival again in a few weeks. So sad.

Not sure why YouTube image and title aren't showing?

But it's still a great song!

Ryan Bingham is my current favorite country singer. Made famous for the Oscar winning song he made for that Jeff Bridges flick, Crazy Heart.

I'm grunching, so I"m not sure if anyone mentioned The Handsome Family. Their songs are weird, beautiful and morbid.

Not sure why the YouTube tags don't work for me.

I love Jamey Johnson, and I think people that don't like country music will like a lot of his music as well. (Hard to say for sure my tastes keep moving more toward country type stuff.)
