I went to visit my niece yesterday, she is nine years old. I am already stacking up books that will help her with real life situations. Stuff like psychology, economics etc. She loves buying books like narnia etc. She reads them but I am not sure if she get to the end.

At what age should I give her the books mentioned above? What age they start to understand and appreciate those types of books?

I don't want to ruin her future interest should I make a mistake with timing.

Sorry for the butchered grammar. I am an immigrant.

You should let her enjoy reading first. It's usually in college where people are forced to read the kind of books that you're suggesting, and then stop reading forever afterward.

Yeah, what Duke said. You should be fostering her love for reading rather than trying to educate her on the ways of the world.

When I was 15 or 16 I started to get interested in non-fiction (physics & basic finance/investing) and I'd say I was fairly unique amongst my peers.

Also are you actually stockpiling physical books? Seems like just keeping a list and then giving them to her on an e-reader when she's ready makes more sense.

yeah this.

If you wanna try anything, get her a well written classic so she at least has the opportunity to read something beautiful. then just hope it sticks.

No one is going to read a non fiction book unless its in a subject they are interested in, or are forced to. If she shows an interest in psychology or econ (lol) then whatever age that is, get her a book or two on it.

This.

I was gonna post something but the first 3 responses have it locked up.

Fairy stories are great for kids. Don't try to lead them to something else; just provide some suggestions if they show an interest and desire in that direction.

Thanks guys.. Kind of newb when it comes to children. She has shown interests in what read, mostly. Psychology stuff. I will wait until she is in high school before I send the books her way. I m going to get her more fictional books. For now!

Ciao

You can get her fictional books that will still make her think critically. I read The Giver when I was in middle school. I remember Bridge to Terabithia was the first (only?) book that made me cry and Tuck Everlasting blew my mind in elementary school as well.

Everyone is different. When I was first learning to read, my favorite book some encyclopedia-like book aimed at kids. It's the exception and not the rule, but I wouldn't rule it out for her at any age.

I used to read the encyclopedia when I was like 4 or 5 because it had really cool pictures/diagrams and explanations of how automobiles and airplanes worked.
