As for the expired Kraft Dinner.. When I was in university I tried to eat some that was 1 year past the date, it was full of little white bugs crawling around inside the sealed package. I suspect in your case, being that it's 5 years past, all the bugs have already died and you ate them. Extra protein ftw!

The main problem with my KD is that it was KD. Everyone else is making beautiful steaks, and I am eating prehistoric packaged pasta. Booo!

I'm cooking steak for myself and my gf for Valentine's day tomorrow. I plan to get an 10 oz filet for me and and 8 oz filet for her. I am going to make onion straws as the main side and also sautee some colored bell peppers to add color to the plate. Do I need another side? She doesn't really like salad so I'm going to avoid that.

I need a wine suggestion (like type, not necessarily brand or anything, but if someone has a suggestion of a $10-25 bottle I would be happy to hear it). I don't really like wine and know very little about it, but plan to buy a bottle for us to split.

I also need a dessert suggestion (something I can just buy-I'm not baking).

I'll try to sneak some pictures, but won't be getting myself into any situations where she is asking why I'm taking pics of the steak.

Get a malbec

For dessert, go to grocery store and get an angelfood cake and a carton of strawberries and some whipcream

Clean and slice the strawberries into thinnish slices and toss with a few spoonfuls of sugar. Let it sit for 15 minutes then spoon onto a slice of angelfood cake and top with whipcream. Simple and delicious and looks like you actually did something. It's popular for vday so get it before store sells out

I might try a malbec.

I should have mentioned that she doesnt like fruit in her dessert (wtf right?). Does sound delicious though. Also, I work until about 6:30 and am going grocery shopping and then straight to her place to cook so I couldnt even make an elaborate dessert if I wanted. In all likelihood I will buy some small chocolate cake or something, but not sure if there are better ideas.

Imo you need another side. If you dont have the time for a starch, Creamed spinach is quick and easy and fills the plate.

Malbec is good and hip, But I prefer Cabernet.

Bought dessert, usually sucks imo. Fruit is the easiest way out of not baking. I'd get some Tollhouse pre made cookie dough and some ice cream. bake the cookies. bit of ice cream on top of/in between cookies. Easy, cheap, delicious.

I was originally gonna make a potato side of some sort but keep wavering back and forth about whether or not its too much.

I could probably do cookies.

Storebought chocolate mousse is easy too. serve it in a stemmed glass and it won't resemble jello pudding quite as much =/

If you own ramekins, or feel like buying them, individual molten center chocolate cakes are ridiculously easy, and chicks (let's get serious, dudes too) love them. A scoop of vanilla ice cream or fresh whipped cream, and gg.

Side wise, I think you're probably fine. Don't want to go too heavy. Maybe buy a nice bread? If you wanted to do a starter or whatever a simple plate of cheese, nuts, fruit is always good. Slightly more work but still easy is a few bruschetta.

Buy a red velvet cake at Costco. They are on sale.

Chocolate mousse is way too easy to make to consider buying some terrible supermarket version.

So I'm continuing with my experiment of using the method in the OP on some lesser cuts of meat. First try was with a big ass chuck roast for $4.99/lb, which turned out like crap - do not recommend. Second I tried it on a sirloin tip steak $5.88/lb. It turned out pretty nice and tender.

This time I tried it on a couple of chuck eyes ($5.88/lb). Added sea salt and pepper and wrapped them back up before heading over to buddy's house for a BBQ Sunday night. :

I'm still working on my grilling technique and probably gave these a bit too much direct flame:

But they still turned out really tender and juicy, if a bit overdone. Would recommend:

Buy a real steak next time. Chuck is good for stews and longer lower cooking due to tough connective tissue (which you probably got caught in your teeth). "Eye" is also probably a good word to avoid for steaks.

Huh? You mean like rib "eye?" Dude, this chuck eye tasted great, very little tough connective tissue. I won't say it was as good as a ribeye, but it was better than a sirloin.
