Re: Cooking A Good Steak

Ok...so I have not really read much of this thread because I never had a need to since I am a vegetarian. Buuuut...I plan on celebrating steak and a BJ day for my bf on the 14th since he is awesome and treated me so special on Valentine's Day. Obviously, I haven't the slightest idea how to cook or buy a steak. What kind of steak should I buy and how can I cook it simply? Nothing too hard because I don't know that I could handle it. Also, no grilling methods can be used since it's cold and grilling is kinda out of the question. Any suggestions you guys can give me would be awesome. Thanks!

Re: Cooking A Good Steak

Go to any butcher or high end market and get a Ribeye or a filet, PRIME. Costco and Whole Foods are examples of places where you can purchase this type of meat.

Cook it using any of the myriad simple and effective methods described in this awesome thread. You don't need any fancy materials or ingredients and most of the methods, such as pan searing in a cast-iron on the stovetop, are virtually foolproof and provide excellent results.

Youtube "cooking a good steak" for visual aid if you need it and watch several of them and come up with a way you think will work best for you. You should be fine and he will like it.

On the subject of A-5 level beef, lets not forget Kobe beef's cousin, the Kagoshima beef.

Thank you so much Brocktoon. That will definitely help me to buy a steak. Hopefully I won't mess it up too bad.

Here in Hong Kong, wagyu is ridiculously overhyped. Let me be the first to say that I prefer eating USDA any day over Wagyu. Wagyu is just tender and fat, there's no beef flavour to it.

Beef fat = beef flavor.

2nd Attempt - Tried to cook my steak to more than blue-rare this time...

Costco NYStrip - From the same pack as last time.

Came out a solid medium-rare.

All: Those Kobe pics look incredible. Gobbo, where are those pics from?

pegger: That looks like a perfectly cooked medium, nice and uniform all the way across. Looks great. Hit it right in the middle between this one and your last one and you'll have the perfect steak for my taste.
