I don't have a problem with oil. I have a problem with the hipster ad.

That Jaggermeister commercial with the ice cold blonde that we're supposed to think is hot but is actually just creepy.

I was thinking briefly about this the other day. What is with advertising's obsession with hipsters? I get the feeling hipsters exist way more in advertising than they do in real life. I see and interact with plenty of 20 and 30 somethings and none of them are really hipsters or even close. It seems like hipsters are very tiny subculture that fit an extremely narrow demographic profile but advertisers have this boner for them.

And on top of that, it's not even like hipsters are considered a popular subculture. Pretty much everyone who isn't a hipster mocks or despises them. The Wikipedia article on hipsters is pretty interesting and talks about how even the very term hipster is used almost always as a pejorative.

I hate hipsters way more than is healthy so I'm probably over thinking it.

Maybe we should reverse the reasoning: subconsciously hipsters are hated because they look like an ad version of a human being, a marketing stereotype of an age group (24-35 or whatever) with a socioeconomic status (urban, middle to upper middle class) that advertisers want to target in priority. A few people decided to mimic this representation and you get hipsters.

Probably because you're a hipster.

Spoiler:

wiki on hipsters had this gem:

Quote:
Christian Lorentzen of Time Out New York argues that "hipsterism fetishizes the authentic" elements of all of the "fringe movements of the postwar era—Beat, hippie, punk, even grunge", and draws on the "cultural stores of every unmelted ethnicity" and "gay style," and then "regurgitates it with a winking inauthenticity."
Nails it imo. It's the "winking inauthenticity" that's so enraging.

Yeah the Wikipedia article does a surprisingly good (and well sourced) job of actually attempting to define a hipster

Quote:
It is broadly associated with indie and alternative music, a varied non-mainstream fashion sensibility, vintage and thrift store-bought clothing, generally progressive political views, organic and artisanal foods, alternative lifestyles and snobbery.
They all wanna show off what special snowflakes they are with all their quirkiness but isn't it amusing all their supposed 'quirkiness' manifests itself in such predictable patterns. They may as well be goth kids from the 90's. Don't even get me started on them.

Nah the problem with "hipster culture" is that going out of your way to forcibly go against the societal norm is worse than just being an imperfect you. Hey we get it 2005 Arcade Fire is amazing and flannel shirts rock and Mario 2 is the best Mario - but you should probably actually think it before you throw it on a t-shirt.

Any of the "This is how crack began" commercials for the new FX series Snowfall. It's like, holy ****, if there's ever a time machine invented we could prevent crack from beginning by stopping that one random black dude from stepping on a glass vial on a sidewalk.

Seriously, they might as well have a commercial where a guy is laying naked on a glass coffee table with his legs pulled up, with a pile of white powder right below his *******, and then he rips a huge fart into the powder while lighting it on fire, and the resulting ignition blows the whole mess into Ike Turner's face and say that is how crack began, because it has as much to do with crack beginning as anything they've showed in the previews for this show so far.

The thing is Arcade Fire is terrible, flannel shirts are only good in cool weather, and Mario 2 is far from the best Mario game. It really seems like the problem is they like stuff that sucks.
