Great news for OOT - the chess set drama returns. If you missed it the first time, you can revisit the entire first act below. If you haven't read through the original thread, please don't grunch ITT. BTW, tl;dr
*Crazy cousin Betty wants chess set for Richard
*My father tells them to f**k off
*Betty said monies in the Trust will stay there for eternity
*Father says that's fine, nobody gets the chess set
So nothing had really transgressed in the last 6 months, which was fine by me. Out of the blue, my father calls and asks how much is left in the trust? I tell him about $3300, he wants to know if he can get half to help pay taxes. I tell him I have to check with cousin Betty, I'll let him know.
I send this email to Betty...
We currently have about $3300 in the Trust and we should be getting a refund from the county from the property taxes. Do you want to disburse the money currently left in the account to your Mom and my Dad?
Betty's response...
Not until the chess set situation is cleared up to my satisfaction.
My reply...
As I remember, the way we left things off last time was that my dad suggested you or Richard call him directly to discuss the situation. Did that ever happen? If not, the ball’s in your court.
And just so we’re clear…are you saying you refuse to distribute the money in trust to the rightful beneficiaries?
This last line is absolutely my attempt to get her to admit that she's not doing her duties as a Trustee. I was actually going to just write a check for my father for half the money, have him cash it, and tell Betty after the fact.
Betty's reply...
I called the trust lawyer and he said that I didn't have to distribute any money if I felt something unfair was going on. So yes, you are correct.
And uncle gets all of these emails and I have been patiently waiting for him to contact Richard and give him the chess set.
I made it clear with you that I want all communication with all members by email, not by phone. I am not going to call your dad. I want all of this in writing. So I have no idea what you are talking about.
I told Richard he could call Uncle if he wanted to but that it was really our job to enforce the trust, not his.
Uncle should give Richard the chess set. Grandma and Grandpa not only verbally told everyone so, they also wrote it down, which i sent to you forever ago.
I'm actually pleased with this email. She admits she isn't going to distribute the money. My plan is to write my dad the check and once it's cleared, say something to Betty like "I did what I think is fair, you do whatever you'd like from now on."
Then BOOM, my dad decides to chime in. I think this is the first email he's sent during this entire affair and he sent it to everyone involved.
The final word:
No one gets the chess set until I die. Then it is going to Amid.
Uncle ****
This one actually pisses me off quite a bit. By chiming in now, he is only making the situation worse. I actually don't even want the chess set. I told Betty that I'd give it to Richard if it were mine to give. But now it looks like I'm in cahoots with my father since I stand to benefit if I take his side. I decided that I was NOT going to give him the money, and I'm currently thinking about what I want to do next.
Amid: Doing something that will 100% provoke Betty to file a lawsuit against you seems like a bad play.
Your dad is hard up for $1700? I'm pretty sure we could get together a fund for him and easily raise that amount, so he can continue to tell Betty to please go **** herself with a retractable baton.
