Dr. Spaceman has the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, not himself as it is listed, lol. Thanks for catching that error! I'll correct it in the next wheel update.

Just caught another one - jmakin has #20 locked up, but we haven't decided on his anti-#Thinman charity yet.

If anyone sees any errors on the wheel, in the pledges, or anything else, please speak up so I can correct them!

Thanks for that pledge, NhlNut! Very generous of you!

Outward Bound is the leading provider of experiential education programs for youth and adults. With a national network of schools and hundreds of courses in wilderness settings and urban environments, Outward Bound has helped people discover strength of character, an ability to lead and a desire to serve for over 50 years.

Outward Bound California is a regional Outward Bound School that was founded in 2008. We offer experiential learning programs that challenge students to develop the skills and inner strengths they need to succeed in their schools, communities and careers.
Through our Bay Area Center, located in San Francisco’s Presidio, our instructors lead year-round programs in public schools and in partnership with other youth serving nonprofits. In 2011-2012, the Bay Area center engaged nearly 1,000 students, largely through the generosity of our donors.

Through our High Sierra base camp, young people embark on multi-week wilderness courses in the summer that challenge them to dig deep and discover hidden strengths. Youth navigate rugged landscapes and scale peaks far away from urban life. In 2012, 250 students ventured out on these expeditions, 1 in 3 of whom received a partial or full scholarship.

Outward Bound California is a 501(c)3 non-profit educational organization with Tax ID number 26-4206241. Our mission is To Change Lives Through Challenge and Discovery.

...the specific page is a pledge drive. it's no different then pledging $1 for every mile jimmy walks....the $$$ still goes to the specified charity.

2. These 37 rOOTletters will get to choose a number from a roulette wheel to call their very own, as well as an IRS accredited 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
Outward Bound California is not a 501(c)3 charitable organization, #Thinman. It's a 501(c)3 educational organization, as you showed us above.

The 501(c)(3) designation covers a bunch of different kinds of tax-exempt organizations (including educational, as is Outward Bound), which is why I specified in the rules that the picks be charitable organizations.

I'm pretty flexible, but work with me here, please.

All 501(c)3 organizations are public charities. Education is a sub-set of charitable.

OK, I'm not going to argue over this. #Thinman is in with #18 and Outward Bound California.

killa is not in with the Human Fund. For anyone wondering why, it's a fake charity from Seinfeld.

Didace - Not all 501(c)3 organizations are public charities, and education(al) is not a subset of charitable. I suggest you review IRS publication 557 if you disagree.

offTopic - I never said that Outward Bound California was not a public charity. It is likely classified as a public charity 501(c)3 educational organization. That is not the same thing as a public charity 501(c)3 charitable organization.

Chop - This is my industry.

"Organizations described in section 501(c)(3) are commonly referred to as charitable organizations. Organizations described in section 501(c)(3), other than testing for public safety organizations, are eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions in accordance with Code section 170" Link

A public charity, as opposed to a private foundation, meets the requirements of Section 509(a)(1) and include -
  1. A church or a convention or association of churches,
  2. An educational organization such as a school or college,
  3. A hospital or medical research organization operated in conjunction with a hospital,
  4. Endowment funds operated for the benefit of certain state and municipal colleges and universities,
  5. A governmental unit, and
  6. A publicly supported organization.
Yes, in Pub 557 the IRS lists charitable as a subset of 501(c)3 and then defines all 501(c)3s as charities. Government regs being confusing is not a surprise. I'll leave it at that.

Getting back on track, I'll put my extra $10 on #2 - Friends of Homeless Animals.

Non-profit is in no way a guarantee that the business is on the up and up. Lotta shady characters start non-profits for some reason or another. That's not even counting the huge non-profits with ridiculous overhead.

Highly unlikely that will happen given that this is the Bellagio, it is happening in the high limit room, and electronics are generally not allowed near roulette wheels. They barely allowed photos last year, and even then the floor insisted on taking the photos themselves with our phones, we were not allowed to do it ourselves.
