Re: Chances of landing a research assistant job?
I said I was done with this thread but I have come back to lol more at the OP.
Dear lord. There are at least 4 people ITT giving you advice that I *know* have a PhD (aside from myself). So the line is at least 5.

Basically same advice you guys have given. And it's garbage. I've asked like 12 professors so far. 11 responded, 9 said no, one said maybe in December, one suggested other professors...Only reason I reached out was cuz of the advice from you guys and some others. Why should I volunteer in a lab when I could instead do the same thing but get paid? The only reason is if it's impossible to get a paid job with my experience.
|
So nobody is even willing to let you work in a lab for free but you continue to hold out hope that one of them secretly really wants to pay you to do the same thing?

Sorry, meant to call everyone else docs (i.e. still in graduate school, maybe the very beginning of it), not postdocs. I need to start getting advice from postdocs, not first year grad students. I mean, grad students may have the best intentions but I think their advice is sometimes bad.

My advice weeks ago was exactly what you should have done. Glad you finally talked to the prof. better late than never. Ishe going to do anything specific for hooking you up somewhere? If you didn't ask him (likely), call him back and ask him point blank.
Btw, I'm a phd with about a decade of experience.
You are kind being a dildo itt, but I can understand your frustration. Just gotta grow up a bit,.but I agree that you gotta start somewhere. Perhaps thats why I keep saying just do something. It doesn't mean you can't keep looking. If you volunteer somewhere and get a real gig, leave. They will totally understand. And if you get a crappy job then get another one,.leave. They will also understand. It igs a crappy job and people leave all the time. I do think since of the responses have been elitist and that kinda sux,.but part of our stems from their frustration with you dildosity in the thread. Good luck

Re: Chances of landing a research assistant job?
Update:
Had a two interviews today. One with Aerotek Scientific (staffing agency). Nice people and nice building, but people there seemed young and inexperienced. I thought the interview went well. They will be searching for a matching position.
Second interview was at a water testing laboratory. They don't do research, just test water for bacteria, metals, contaminants, ect. I'm new to the interview process so I don't know if it went well, but I think it did. It was kind of informal, they didn't ask a lot of questions. I talked to two people. The second actually went to the same school I did, and he was very friendly and casual in conversation. They walked me around the lab.
Only "sign" that it didn't go well (and this might be nothing) was this: The first person (HR manager) said they'd let me know by Friday. The second person I talked to said they'd be interviewing for another 1-2 weeks. Could that be a sign that he was thinking, "This person is alright...but not the best. Maybe I out to try interviewing a few more candidates and if no one is better, I'll just take him"?
Looking back, I now realize that I totally butchered the interview at the particle lab (MMLabs). I was 7 minutes late and answered two questions terribly. I'm certain this interview went better.

Re: Chances of landing a research assistant job?
The more I read of this thread, the more certain I am that OP doesn't really understand what research really is about.

Well, that's a relief. I was worried that those 6 post-BS years I spent in industry didn't count.

Re: Chances of landing a research assistant job?
Aerotek is probably a good place to start as far as finding a job and getting some experience. Good luck.

Re: Chances of landing a research assistant job?
God, I'm so anxious to hear the decision...Given these facts, how do you guys like my chances?
1. After sending my resume to the staffing agency that works with the company, they immediately (within hours) called me.
2. The interview, including tour, was about 40 minutes.
3. They began the interview not asking questions but explaining in depth what they do.
4. I talked to two people, after the short first interview the person introduced me to a different person.
5. The second person, especially, was very friendly and casual in conversation.
6. I got a nice tour of the place.
7. They are very very busy right now and the person whose role I'm filling is quitting Friday.
8. When asked when I can hear a decision, the first person said, "by Friday", and the second person said, "within two weeks".
9. I, again, didn't go into the interview completely fresh and was a little tired.
10. I was disappointed with the quality of the town that the place was in and the building. It was in an industrial area and their place was a little messy. Nevertheless, I still want the job but I don't know if they detected disappointment in me.

Re: Chances of landing a research assistant job?
Wow, looking great, congrats! I think you are certain to get this job. But are you sure that it's good enough? It's sort of suspicious that you got it so easily, you might want to consider waiting for a better opportunity to come along.
