Our family owns a hobby farm in Vermont. Our neighbors down the road ran a summer camp. I'd occasionally hang out there, and I was friends with their two sons. It turns out that the husband of that couple was Mike Lynn, who was the center/forward on the UCLA squad the year before Kareem got there. In those days, freshman couldn't play on the varsity squad, so, even though Mike started, he got crushed in practice every day playing against the freshman team. Regardless, Kareem and Mike were friendly, and I was shooting baskets with Mike's son one day when Kareem drove in. He shot a couple of baskets with us and then went inside.

Mike ended up having an NBA career for a couple of years. Oddly, even though I saw him often every summer, I ran into him randomly in a hotel in Utah one time.

The Jackass guys used to party a lot at some bar I used to go to once in a while. This was pretty much right after their height of fame, so everyone in the bar would always be oohing and aahing over them.

Michael Spinks used to come into the supermarket I worked at when I was a kid. Always dressed up and pimpin'.

I shook the "Man of 1000 Holds" Dean Malenko's hand once at a bar. He was with some hot chick and seemed like he didn't want to be put out, but was cool about a couple drunk knuckleheads interrupting him out of the blue.

Was at a Best Buy once and noticed a couple employees (one male, one female) fawning over some customer who's obviously trying to chat up the girl... realized it was "The Executioner" Bernard Hopkins.

In the early nineties I played pickup hoops with the Fresh Prince and Anthony Kiedis (not at the same time) at a park in Burbank I used to play at semi-regularly in college, not far too far from studios. One afternoon Will Smith was there with 3 or 4 strong looking fellows, no idea who they were or their relationship to him. I guarded Will a couple games, his game was nondescript- nothing noteworthy, not horrible. He made a few buckets, thanks to my normal matador defense combined with my impression that the dudes he was with wouldn't take kindly to anything physical. Will was polite enough and didn't say ten words, but one of his boys was holding court like in White Men Can't Jump (including holding the ball for 5 minutes in between plays but without the humor.)

Anthony Kiedis was there another afternoon with a friend. He was cool and joked around, but was intense and physical on the court.

Oh yah, once I said sup to Flea when I stopped to watch a pickup game in NYC, and realized that Flea was also watching through the fence. He was pushing a stroller.

I'm friends with multiple people who are friends with Kate Mara. Been to prob a half dozen things she attended and sat at the same table as her at a wedding once. Decent chance she would recognize me on the street and close to 100% she would know who I was if I reminded her. Can't really say anything about her other than she's pretty polite/normal.

I saw Ryan Gosling at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Met all of the guys from Machine Head after the concert that was filmed for the Elegies DVD. They were very drunk but happy to talk to fans and pose for photos. I was in the front row at the gig so there's a couple of close ups of me on the DVD

Oh yeah I saw John Amos in an airport and he wouldn't take a picture with me, but he did ask me for directions.

Not sure if this forum is the intended audience but I know the girls from Broad City (friends of friends) and they are awesome. They pretty much play exaggerated versions of themselves on the show afaik.

sat directly across from cameron diaz and joanna garcia while waiting to get on a flight from boston to new york a few years ago. noticed them both chowing down on some potato chips without realizing who they were. garcia was easily the more attractive one irl. both were nice when some fans talked to them as they were getting on the flight.

also ran into kim kardashian and north west at toys r us in times square a couple years ago. didn't get much of a read on her since her entourage escorted her to a private personal shopper area.

I was at Bondi Beach in Sydney around 10 years ago when Paris Hilton was at the height of her fame. I was sunbathing and suddenly saw like 99% of the beach suddenly start running in the same direction. There were screams. I had been to Australia for like 5 days of my life at this point and I thought for sure there must be a shark attack. I didn't want to intervene but given there were hundreds of people running in that direction I thought I'd go see what's going on as well. Turned out it wasn't a shark attack but a limo had driven Paris Hilton to the beach, she got out of the car, dipper her toe in the ocean, turned back and drove away. I guess that's what they call an appearance?

Anyway later that same night (or possibly the next night) I was at a bar/club in Sydney, like a lounge type place, and I saw a dark-haired woman who I thought looked distinctly familiar. Took me a while to realize it was Paris Hilton wearing a dark wig trying to go incognito. I then noticed she also had security goons nearby who were trying to pretend were normal customers but were doing a pretty lousy job at it. I considered going to say hi or something, but I figured she probably just wanted to try to be a normal person for a night. A couple of minutes later some douche spotted her, asked her to pose for a picture, and then the whole bar knew. She left immediately, guarded by the security people.

Random quick interactions:

Saw Woody Allen in Cannes, sort of bumped into him but didn't get to talk to him. Hung out with the Dudesons a few times. Was in Iceland with the metal band Nightwish 12 hours after their band broke up, they were randomly on the same flight and hotel, we all got stranded in a snowstorm and couldn't go out. Bunch of local (Scandi) celebrities, plus a few random non-A-list American actors and actresses at the poker tables. Oh and Nelly the rapper. My ex-gf's family was friends with a bunch of ice hockey players including Teemu Selänne but never got to meet him.

99% of poker celebs. Esfandiari asked me to rate his girlfriend once.

Played with Jamie Gold in NY not long after his WSOP win. He was way less obnoxious than on TV, didn't do the whole table talk thing.

Met a lot of college bball players when I was a kid through AAU / camps, probably the most famous was George Lynch so nothing too crazy there.

Met lots of 90s punk bands either opening for them or covering shows for a local zine, none of them all that famous by today's standards. Most exciting for me was meeting Blake Schwarzenbach from Jawbreaker, I asked him for an autograph and he drew me a picture of Captain Haddock.

Mike Doughty (Soul Coughing) played a solo show at my college and I was part of the crew that ran things, picked him up and drove him around, etc. This was before he got sober and he was suuuper strung out, kept nodding off and we got a speeding ticket on our way to town and the cop was like, who is this ****ing junkie? Luckily we got off without getting searched or anything. He ****ed my friend who was a giant fan of his, I imagine it was probably like that whole Rex Manning / Liv Tyler thing except with more heroin.

My sister was an extra in a very early Michelle Pfieffer movie. My sister said Pfieffer was very stuck up.

I got the original Uhurara (sp) mad at me. I had a bottle of water with me when I asked for an autographed photo at a convention. She angrily told me to, "get that water away from my photos."

Ving Rhames is cool as ****. I worked with him as a PA on a SyFy movie about zombies. Taryn Manning also cool, but I only talked to her a few times.

Funny how that works... Jerry Stackhouse (recipient of many technical fouls) was probably the nicest athlete I've met. My friend spotted him having lunch next to our office, asked for an autograph, he said "let me go wash up", came back, signed, and talked to us for a few minutes.

damn forgot another one earlier that was surprising

GUCCI MANE, played at a table with him at the Hard Rock in Miami. He was shockingly tall (6'3 or maybe even 6'4 if I had to guess) and came off really mild mannered. Was pretty much the opposite of what you'd think a gangster rapper would be like.
