Well, yes, my toilet has clogged again. It is the second time since I moved in last August and I am too embarrassed to call my apartment maintenance tomorrow and have them to do it, because I feel like it's my fault. I have now attempted to plunge it about 15 times over the last hour and a half, and the water in the bowl is clear, but it still overflows everytime I flush. FML.

So I'm going out to buy a toilet auger from Lowes. I am deciding between two options:

One of them is the Cobra 7/16" x 3' Homeowner Toilet Auger for $7.48.

The other option is the Cobra 1/2" x 3-1/2" Professional Toilet Auger for $27.13.

I'm thinking I should go with the professional option for 20 dollars more, because $27.13 isn't really that expensive, and I REALLY don't want to have to make a return trip to the same store an hour later to buy the larger option.

Any tips? I'm a veteran of plunging toilets but have never operated a snake before. I'm kinda excited I must admit.

i bought a cheap one from walmart and the thing actually worked pretty easy. just get the cheap one... all you gotta do is poke a hole in the **** and it'll flush

Thanks bro. When you used it, did you have the water turned off to the tank while you did it or no? Does the **** come with instructions? I'm thinking I'll just knock it loose then turn the water back on and flush?

its just a long flexible rod with a handle on the end so you can shimmy it through the bends in the pipe to wherever the clog is... you dont need to do anything to the water. its easy, dont sweat it.

i don't have an auger but i have a really weak toilet atm and i clog it all the time. when the plunger isn't enough i've found that i can unclog it by dumping warm water mixed with dishwashing soap, let it sit and then stick a hangar down the hole and dislodging the **** with that.

i'm pretty good at plunging. giver hell man. get some water in there, hold the floating ball up so it doesn't overflow, and then plunge it down once, and from there make a ton of small fast plunges. ie. just constantly push and release on the plunger, but don't let the thing actually return to it's original state. eventually you should hear the beautiful sound of the water being sucked down and see the sight of it swirling off into obscurity.

Try a wire hangar. They're not just for back alley abortions.

Tried the dishwashing soap **** as well as pouring like 6 gallons of hot water from an empty 2 liter into it to attempt to dislodge. All it did was give me a soapy overflow.

Did this. I think I ended up pushing the clog about a foot down into the tank and water is swirling up and down so that's why my bowl is coming up clean. I think I really need the snake to break that **** up-pun intended.

Get a cheap garden hose, hook one end up to an outside spigot, and stick the other end in the toilet, kind of lodged under the little lid under which the water and waste goes.

Got the picture?

Now go outside, turn the spigot up to full force, turn the spigot back off, and go back inside.

See? All fixed.

As an alternative, buy a plunger. Push slowly down, and the pop back up. In other words, put most of the power and force into the pull-up stroke rather than the push down stroke. (That's the proper way to plunge).

I've never needed an auger. (I have lots of experience - used to own five houses and had four of them rented).

Better for the hose trick if you have a confederate hold the hose in the toilet. If that thing pops out of there, it's one heck of a mess.

I suck at this I guess. I'm pushing it down there but it's not finding anything.

make sure the coil is retracted all the way inside the pole part (so the total length of the handle+pole is at maximum) before you put it in there, then hook the curved part under the toilet drain and push/spin the handle all the way down so the coil goes as far as it can.

Flush kitty litter down again?

Doesn't matter if it's your fault, just call them and have them fix it.

Save the receipt so you can return it for refund after use.

How do I retract it all the way inside? It still has four-six inches of coil hanging out and it won't respond to a finger push either.

Update lol:

I've tried to auger it 3 or 4 times and it's been clean water coming up in the bowl when I pull the auger up, until this last time. This last time this nasty yellow color came up in the water so I think I've hit the clog, but it still overflowed when I tried to flush it. So I lifted up the valve or whatever it's called in the tank to keep it from overflowing. Does this mean I should just try again?

I still can't get the damn coil to retract.

I have a pretty weak flushing toilet. The key is to flush immediately. Even letting it sit for 30 seconds can clog my toilet, but you kind of have to flush in one motion
