Hicks is prob my fav stand up of all time. Stanhope is my 2nd fav, which makes sense since he's basically Hicks for the 2000s.

It's difficult to articulate why I think he's great, it's like trying to articulate why you like any music, books, movies, tv shows better then others. I guess I just find him very intelligent and witty, and a good story teller which I find very entertaining.

I always liked Sam Kinison a lot, but I never thought that much of Bill Hicks. The cult following he got after he died was surprising to me.

A lot of people don't like Hicks very much. One of Ron's least misanthropic opinions ever.

I've heard all of his stuff and I'm definitely a fan, but I can't listen to him much anymore. It might be from all the Tool-heads that started listening to him after Aenima came out. Same deal with all the new Doors fans after that movie came out. There's so much other stand up specials I'd rather listen to instead. I've listened to the entire Hicks catalog probably 4 or 5 times over the years, and I think that'll do. But I still play Cross, CK, Stanhope and Oswalt stuff frequently.

I got into a conversation about Hicks and Stanhope with some friends, and they're both HUGE Hicks fans. I actually said the same thing about him being the "Hick's of the 2000's" but I think Doug is better.

Speaking of Sam Kinison, I did a Breaking Bad Marathon over the weekend and when Hank is beating the sh*t outta Jesse, he sounds exactly like Kinison. It was pretty awesome.

I'm with Ron. I try and try to watch his stuff on youtube and see why everyone thinks he's such a comedy god. I just don't see it. But it is probably a time and place kind of thing. To his credit, he's still way funnier than Denis Leary.

Maybe Ron can do a compilation of overrated comedic hack/social satirist rant artists like Bill Hicks and Lenny Bruce and, uh, Dane Cook and call it Stand-up That Doesn't Stand Up.

Also, while I am by no means a Doors fan (at least not since I was 16), I must release a rather substantial LOL to the notion that the Doors would be mentioned alongside The Steve Frickin Miller Band....ever.

Yeah. Denis Leary's No Cure for Cancer was a straight rip-off of Bill Hicks. People are right to say that Hicks wasn't very funny - but Leary has you dying with the same material so you can't say he wrote bad jokes.

Yea the references fade in time...Like you have to be an idiot to claim Lenny Bruce is something other than a comic god but I've never laughed at any of his stuff. His jokes all sound like "a jew, an italian and irishman walk into a bar" to me.
My fav Hicks joke was something like "ohh no two Judas Priest fans died..there goes two future gas station attendants..". Funny to me because I remember this dirtbag kid in 7th grade, like the first kid to smoke cigs in the bathroom would always have a judas priest tshirt on.

I'm not buying Bill Hicks as being analogous to Lenny Bruce.

I only watched a bit of his stuff after some hot ass girl told me I reminded her of him and I had no idea who she was talking about.

I still don't know whether or not she was paying me a compliment.

as it's been said a few times already, it's not really fair to compare bill hicks to comics 20 years later. bill hicks' style was groundbreaking for his time and raised the bar of stand-up for everyone who followed him.

This is a way tired topic, and it would be super awesome if the next time Ron made a thread stating an opinion he thought would garner him some attention the thread just got locked and he ****ed off or something.

As many have said Hick's stuff hasn't aged well and it's really hard to judge him outside of the context of his era. Within that context he's amazing.

To think he was doing material that was already done in a better way is backwards. He was virtually unknown because of his material, the **** the other comedians stayed away from. Sure, it may not hold up as well listening to it today but I have an easier time listening to Arizona Bay and Relentless than old Carlin crap that from the early 70's like Class Clown - that **** sucks now. Pryor is the only one that really holds his weight but Hicks is still greatness.

- Christians have some weird beliefs, a lot of Christians wear crosses around their necks. Do you think when Jesus comes back he ever wants to see a ****ing cross again? That is like going up to Jackie Onassis with a rifle pendant around your neck! Just thinking of John, just thinking of John.

That was genuinely funny.. "and he ****ed off or something" that

The reason I love Bill Hicks and think he's a comedy legend is because I can relate to the guy and his style of telling jokes. I wouldn't necessarily say he's a stoner's comedian, but he's definitely a smoker's comedian. There aren't many like him. And the reason his comedy has "faded" [in its appeal] like it has is because his [target] audience is much smaller. Add to that his [ironic] death and boom.. Internet cult following. Now his audience is growing more because of potheads and YouTube.

I was gonna make a short list of my other favorite comedians, but I'm too stoned and wgaf.
