So years ago my mom and brother went to a super fancy French restaurant and for after-dinner drink she ordered some Grand Marnier. They came to the table, poured into a big brandy sniffer, heated/twirled it until it flamed. She really liked this.
A week later they were hanging with friends and discussed the presentation, so decided to try it themselves. Mom's friend twirled the sniffer while my brother heated it...it flamed...she panicked...dropped the sniffer...it shattered...and the flaming GM singed most of the hair off his left leg

1. Depends on if you were pretending to be a douchebag or actually being one
2. No, not really, sorry.
3. I don't know much about flair bartending outside of Cocktail the movie. I like Bryan Brown fwiw

CQ, did you ever work at a bar frequented by soldiers coming back from tours?

Re: Bar Talk With Your Host, Clare Quilty
great thread.
my drink contribution:
2-2.5 oz. bourbon
.5-1 oz. lemon juice (i go for the .5 oz., 1 oz. makes it too sour for my taste)
splash simple syrup
shake (or stir, if thats your game)
strain into a chilled glass
enjoy.

Re: Bar Talk With Your Host, Clare Quilty
I made a Sam's Club run this week. Before this thread, we'd usually have Bacardi, beer, wine, and some Cognac for cooking, so the inventory is growing.
I think the difference in taste between my homemade Sidecars and the ones I've ordered out is because I've been using Cointreau at home, and bartenders are using Grand Marnier. I haven't opened the Grand Marnier to prove my theory, but I checked the last drink menu and they listed it in their Sidecars.
I bought the Patron to try a shaken margarita:
I think I might leave the salt off next time. Maybe mine was just too fine? I used ground sea salt.

Please report back with Grand Marnier results. I have a bottle of Cointreau but I will get Grand Marnier if it is worth it for delicious Sidecar.

Re: Bar Talk With Your Host, Clare Quilty
Funny, just today I bought a bottle of Grand Mernier and I'm finding my margarita much smoother than with Cointreau. Entertainme, I am in the no salt camp for a while now, even using kosher salt didn't do the trick.
I'll report results if I make a sidecar with Grand Mernier next.

I like the way you roll, Assani. I've always loved the vodka cran, but I've never considered the possibilities of TWO vodka crans. I will make this happen on my next night out.

Tried the Grand Marnier Sidecar. I'd say it's a little sweeter. I prefer it over Cointreau.
Also, El Timon, that fizz thing is pretty cool.

Re: Bar Talk With Your Host, Clare Quilty
Because of this thread I went from this:
To this
In the last ~2 weeks I've made:
Margarita
Sidecar
Cosmopolitan
Whiskey sour
Pisco sour
Daiquiri
Old fashioned (fantastic!)
Manhattan (not a big fan)
Saratoga (see above)
Martini
Caipirinha
And probably some other stuff I'm forgetting now (because I had 3 cocktails tonight already). And thanks to Wookie's guide to cheap booze I've also managed to keep all the drinking under budget too!

Re: Bar Talk With Your Host, Clare Quilty
Timon, that's awesome. Glad you've gotten some good stuff out of the thread. I take it you don't like sweet vermouth.
Also, I meant to say earlier that people should try Diablo's link, the Bobby Burns. Not for everyone (scotch, drambuie, vermouth and bitters), but I tried one last week and thumbs up.

Re: Bar Talk With Your Host, Clare Quilty
I had a rusty nail (scotch + drambuie) last week at a bar that was doing a liquor promotion. That thing was out of control, almost cloyingly sweet. Not a big fan, although the fact that I was drinking straight 80 proof liquor on ice was well disguised.

Re: Bar Talk With Your Host, Clare Quilty
I think places get the proportions wrong on rusty nails. I've seen bartenders make them with equal parts scotch and drambuie, when I think it should be closer to 3:1. Also the lemon peel is pretty key. I much prefer the Bobby Burns, though.
