Re: Bar Talk With Your Host, Clare Quilty
Read this thread, ordered a negroni last week, the very competent bartender did a fantastic job and it was one of the most interesting (and strongest) drinks I've ever had. ty.

I'm going to a bar tonight for the first time in a year, yay. I can only have one drink because of the baby thing (maaaaaybe two), so I want it to be extra delicious, and not waste it on a vodka tonic or something. It's a pretty dive-y bar AFAIK. What should I get?

Pongo,
Hmm. If it's a dive I would avoid sidecars, old-fashioneds, sazeracs, and the like. Maybe a manhattan up, if you like whiskey/bourbon. If not that, white russians are always tasty. Or a glass of prosecco/champagne and limoncello--that's a class drink for a lady

Gin drinkers,
Thoughts on New Amsterdam? It's been my go-to gin recently at $15/handle. I think it's quite acceptable for a martini, but I'm no connoisseur.

I don't get all the drink nittery going itt. When I'm drinking something alcoholic, I just hope it's tolerable. Any distinctions beyond that are unimportant - if I was going to spend a bunch of time and effort into making something taste good, I'd make a steak.

Between this and the EDF dating thread, you're doing a strong job of sucking hard.

It's my favorite value mixing gin, and holy ****, you can get it for $15/handle? Geez, I've only seen handles for $20 in CA and NY, and I thought it was a bargain at that price. New Amsterdam has a stronger lemon flavor than most gins, and a more muted juniper flavor, I found. Thus, I've found it to be really good in drinks where you want something more interesting than vodka but where you don't necessarily feature the gin as prominently as a Martini. It's not bad in a Martini, but it's easily beaten, albeit only by more expensive brands. In my double blind taste test, it fared quite well, considering the price. Hendrick's reigns supreme for Martinis, imo, but for cocktails with ingredients that might mute the superiority of Hendrick's compared to New Amsterdam, which is a whole lot of them, New Amsterdam is a savvy, tasty value pick.

some of us actually enjoy drinking and don't creep around bars by ourselves hoping to get laid

Wikipedia says 8:2:1, CQ said 2.5:0.75 (cognac/cointreau) iirc

Re: Bar Talk With Your Host, Clare Quilty
Potatos,
Definitely at least 2:1:1. You want cognac to be dominant in the drink's flavor profile.
