Re: Bar Talk With Your Host, Clare Quilty
This thread is going to turn me into an alcoholic. Went and bought all the bar tools today, off to the liquor store tomorrow to buy the components for a sidecar and an old fashioned.
I don't think they sell the bitters anywhere though? Are you guys getting that stuff at grocery stores? Liquor stores?

Re: Bar Talk With Your Host, Clare Quilty
Most liquor stores should at least carry Angostura bitters, which is all you really need for an old fashioned. Better liquor stores will have Peychaud's and/or some flavored bitters.

In Canada, we have one liquor store I checked their online site, didn't seem like they carried any bitters, but I guess I'll have to go in and ask.

In NY state, it's weird. They only sell bitters in the grocery stores. If you can't find bitters at the LCBO or whatever, then check the grocery store in the section where they sell mixers like grenadine, Rose's lime, etc. That's where they're sold in NY.

Deciding whether to read thread. Is there useful info in this thread, or just interesting stories?

Just ordered my first Old Fashioned at a work outing at an expensive Italian Restaurant in Calgary. Will post my report in a few.

Seriously? Weird. Bitters are like 45% alcohol; I didn't think they could legally sell them outside of liquor stores here.

It is on the shelf at all times for anyone who wants to order Absinthe.
The "thing" just holds ice water. You pour the Absinthe in the glass and put the spoon on top with a sugar cube on it. The spoon looks like this.
Light the sugar cube and let it burn for a couple seconds. Then let a slow drip out of the fountain. When all the sugar is gone, serve.
