Do you think that this would be common among most officers if asked the same question? If you don't feel comfortable speaking for them, then that's okay, but hazarding a guess is fine too.

Well, I think much of it has to do with how you do the job. If you're out being a dirty cop, stealing ****, having sex with other guys wives taking bribes etc, yea, you'll have alot to regret.
I was taught early "Whatever you do today you'll have to sleep with tonight".
It's stood by me. I have no shameful tales to tell of me taking bribes or doing anything crazy wrong. I mean I've yelled at some people, and I've said some rude ****, but all this "Pulling cars over in dark areas to beat on them" type stuff, no.
As I said, I'm not the one doing the dirty ****. I was the one who caught one of our jailers bringing in contraband and reported it that morning and arrested him that afternoon.
I feel no shame or remorse for that.

Re: The Ask A Cop Thread
OP,
Given that you were a K9 guy, do you have any dogs as pets right now? Do you view them or treat them differently than you as a non-K9 did? I'm assuming you are sharper on training stuff, feel free to include those sorts of differences as well, like never giving them treats except directly after commands, etc.

Yea, but not really a lot you wanted to mess with. My current woman knew what I did when she met me (We met in the ER). But in general, you really don't wanna be hooking up with those types of girls. Typically they'll have daddy issues, or worse they're constantly in legal trouble and wanna date a cop in hopes you can protect them from their own legal messes.

do you carry a gun when you're off duty? how paranoid would you say you are on a scale of one to ten? ever busted any of your friends/former friends? ever let any of them off for something minor like a traffic ticket? do you think you're a better person than your average felon?

Re: The Ask A Cop Thread
Do you have to memorize all of the state and local laws, or just a subset?
Is there a particular traffic stop that you love to make, because the people violating that particular law are always jerks?

Yes, I have Malinois and a 2 Pits I'm experimenting with. They live with me but they aren't mine.
I work with them daily trying to train them for apprehension work. I'm losing faith in them, they're really good on a bite sleeve but will not "out". I've had some of the best K9 trainers I know helping me and we're all about to give up
As for my Malinois, he retired about a year before I left, so I'm not as strict on the training protocol with him as I once was, but I still try to play with the sleeve with him everyday.
As for general advice, play works much better for me as a reward than treats. All police dogs have an insanely high toy drive, so that's the reward I've been trained to use. I rarely give my dog treats but we play tug of war alot.

I carry a gun. Period.
[QUOTE=deucedeuces;31475277]how paranoid would you say you are on a scale of one to ten?
I'm not paranoid, I'm cautious and observant.

This is the biggest annoyance in the world. It comes from policing in the town you grew up in. I'll pull some car over for suspected DUI, it'll be some guy I would've sworn I've never seen in my life calling me by my first name. He'll know me because he "sat behind me in 7th grade history. I'll do my DUI routine, hook him up, he's saying "Man, I can't believe this! We were do tight!". I'm thinking "How tight can you really be with someone you haven't seen in 14 yrs?". Drop him off at the jail, 10 minutes later my mother will call me "I can't believe you locked up little Jimmy! He was so sweet !"
As for my friends, I don't have the opportunity to since I know their vehicles.

no. I don't really like the term better. I'd say I'm more intelligent than the average felon. I defintely wouldn't use the term better though.

Re: The Ask A Cop Thread
Do you find that an increasing amount of cops believe that they are responsible for the punitive side of justice, in addition to law enforcement?
Example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DQzDP4saFE
Driver nearly runs over cop, gets "punished" for it. Cops get fired.

Re: The Ask A Cop Thread
is it common for k9 handlers to take care of the dog off duty as well?
do you do a normal tour/sector patrol as a k9 unit, get sent to designated areas, or just kind of float around until the dog is needed?
what are your thoughts on the laws in some jurisdictions making assaulting a police animal the same level of crime as assaulting a LEO?

Good evening Sir.
1. What are your thoughts on Gun ownership laws in the US?
2. What are thoughts on medical marijuana use and the use of marijuana in general?
3. Is that you in your avatar?

OK- deleted a ton of crap, left some of the responses because dude was nice enough to give legit responses to trolls.

While I'm glad that you specified which leo you are threatening to ban, I'll admit to being a lil butthurt after you relegated my post (commending the OP's adroit responses to politards) to the crap heap.

How can he answer that without knowing what you consider to be an above-average, or below-average, felon?
OP-
I think you're doing a fine job itt- especially in the manner in which you respond to the pseudo-questions being posed.
I only have one question. Do you like donut holes?

Re: The Ask A Cop Thread
Just comments, no questions yet.
I really like your comments on verbal judo and such. It seems like almost all of the videos that are like "omg, guy gets tasered for jaywalking" could have been prevented if the earliest signs of conflict were dealt with better. Especially true when police put their hands on someone.
Also, ime (my brother is a judge, was a public defender and an assistant DA) working in the criminal justice system makes people confuse right and wrong with legal and illegal. You responded about the incident where the mentally handicapped woman was punched in the face with court decisions. IMO, courts are not always right and even when they are, there still can be a difference between legally right and morally right. In this example, it might be morally right when subduing a mentally handicapped person to use more restraint even if it means risking personally injury.

Re: The Ask A Cop Thread
If you pulled someone over for speeding, what are the factors in his behaviour or w/e that would make you more likely to give him a ticket or not give him a ticket or w/e ?
I live in France and here the cops will often let you get away if you're like 40-45+ but almost always fine you if you're young. Although i was in the car with my friend once and he got pulled over for drunk driving, he was very polite and they ended up just leaving the car and told us to walk home. I was very surprised.
How well does the average cop know the law compared to what you're supposed to know ? I mean obviously you have to know a lot, but here at home, a few cops thought 50cc motorbikes were allowed on the highway (they are not) and thought the legal age to drive them was 14 when it was 16.
