Eder,

Most importantly, hope your wife is doing well.

Do I understand this right? You sailed from the South Pacific up to Oahu, then you're leaving your boat there until such time as you can come back and get it to Canada?

How does that work? Do you find a marina and rent a slip, paying them to keep an eye on things, possibly do some maintenance if necessary, etc?

Unfortunately my 1st mate and also wife suffered an unexpected heart attack, and after a successful protracted recovery she would be iffy to continue our South Pacific trip in the near future.

After a bit of navel gazing I decided to go get my boat and bring it home. Got a couple of buddies foolish enough to help me sail upwind to Nuka Hiva which is a great jumping off point for Hawaii. Long story short we made it after over 1000 knt miles up wind in horrible conditions...(I'm a bit of a pussy). The beached 45' Jeanneau at the South pass of Fakarava can attest to the weather we had.

At any rate after a few days of delaying our Nuka departure to allow Hawaii's first hurricane to pass by, we left Nuka on July 1st making great time only to have another hurricane in our path. Happily this one turned north early, and after 2 days of various lightening storms trying to blow up my boat we finally exited the ITCZ and hit the northern trades at about lat 10 d. Several 190+ mile days later we landed safe in Oahu.

Not bad for a stubble jumper from Alberta lol. Hope to do the Hawaii to Vancouver leg next May. In the meantime I have a nice condo on the water to spend the winter.
Everything about this post makes me happy, except the heart attack. Nice work.

I expect I'll probably have one at some point. I'd guess there are plenty of people who expect to have a heart attack.

Well, I hope to have a massive one someday. I've told my family that is my preferred end, so if it happens that way be happy for me. I've spent way too much time in hospitals watching people be miserable to want any part of that.

Ya, basically I found a marina with a decent amount of security and picked a slip close to the nicest sail boat I could find that had people living aboard.
In this case it was a Halberg Rassey 48...pretty sweet ride. Made friends quickly & they agreed to keep an eye on my boat while I was out of country. The fact they have such good taste in sailboats imply a decent level of competence..

Anyway I'll drag wifey up there in October and use the boat as a floating condo while enjoying Hawaii...(the resort its attached to is $600/nite so pretty swanky).

I'll do my own maintenance while hanging out...basically I'll keep the bottom clean and add a few coats of varnish to the bright work...should take me till February or so haha.

We seemed experts at catching only skipjacks ,not great pics lol. We loaded the freezer in Nuka Hiva at the dock with bigeye & yellowfin for $5 USD/kilo caught that morning so had decent poke & sashimi the rest of the trip.

Additionally, I'm always a bit "stumped?" by boat recommendation requests. I'm more than happy to do it, and provide personal feedback for anyone that asks (I've done this for more than one new oot boat owner). It's just that I've made boat lists before (I should probably just put it into note somewhere so I can copy/paste) so sometimes I think nobody wants to hear my crap again.

It's tough when somebody says " I want to sail around anywhere I want to go, have a great time, and do it for cheap. How do I do that?" Granted, I did that but I've found everyone's definition of "great time & cheap" to be different and it's tough to give a blanket answer. Irieguy has asked me that question repeatedly, for years, and I've yet to come up w/ a satisfactory answer for him

I continue to extend the offer that if you're looking for a boat and send me you're "general requirements and budget" I'll be glad to try and steer you in the right direction and even give input on specific boats, as well as try to explain honestly what you're in for cost wise.

great thread, captain. any more updates?

are you only into sailboats or you like motoryachts too?

i've been thinking about buying a boat but would like something fun, relatively luxurious yet can still cross the ocean. singlehanded, with a lady friend, take kids or guests on safer shorter cruises, etc.

so when i started looking i really liked the design and price point on these absolute 50s:

really nice feature i'm sure you'd like are the red night lights at the helm:

(about 1:55 mark in this video)

but the fuel range on these boats and similar isn't too good. these kinds of boats are only good for a few hundred miles cruising at 22kts i mean depending on which boat you buy you can find one that has a somewhat larger fuel tank or might still cruise good at lower speed 10 kts. but they're not designed for 3,000 nm or anything. is it possible to custom install extra fuel tanks on boats like these for greater range?

plus they're class B-- the recommended specs are good for 200 nm offshore cruising and 15' seas. after that good luck buddy. i know you said the best boat for traveling around the world is the one you have, just curious whether the hull and windows etc. would hold up on these things in open ocean after refitting.

another layout i like on that boat above, and it would be nice having a desk and chair in the captains quarters. no idea what is up with the double head though.

see you get better range and design specs on the bigger yachts but they are too expensive and i wouldn't want to singlehand them anyway.

that Nordavn 52 is a more serious ocean crosser. Bit old fashioned and lacks some pizazz but not too bad. Still a very high quality boat.

Anyway saw your post i quoted and wonder if you've got any recs for $1m or $1.5m or less. if it's new then i prefer under 1m because that's usually the base pack without add ons but i don't know i guess it depends on the boat.

Anybody reading ever sail the Mona Passage and if so did you encounter extra rough stuff?

Particularly interested in Hourglass Shoal.
