So I spent 12 years in a mindnumbingly boring corporate America job where I literally worked MAYBE 2-3 hours a week. The company decided in late 2012 to layoff over 5,000 folks in NA...so I was led ceremoniously out the front door...with a nice severance package.

After laying around for a few months, I decided to get into the casino business and worked at TWO casinos over a period of almost two years. One experience was really good, the other unbelievably bad. Very disappointing as i TRULY loved the industry, the job itself, and all of the unique people I met along the way. But, to say the industry is run in a shady, disturbingly horrible manner is an understatement.

I now work for one of the top companies in the transportation world as a freight broker. I've been doing this for a year now, I'm officially out of training and on my own and building my book of business. I love it, but hate it...

Let me know if you have any questions!

I assume you are in inside sales. Are you one of the older folks in your office? What city and state are you in?

I work in an office of about 80-100 brokers and support staff. I would say the average age is probably 34. I just turned 40. In the office there are probably 25 of us 40 or above. The company historically goes after college grads with competitive backgrounds. However, with the changing economy and so many professionals out of work and searching, the company has found value in opening it's range so to speak.

I live just south of Cincinnati in Northern Kentucky.

I worked for seven months at Belterra Casino in Florence IN and for almost 18 months at Horseshoe Cincinnati. I was a tables games dealer at both. I dealt mainly blackjack - including high limit BJ mainly - and 3 card poker and carnival games.

Do you have certain metrics you have to hit daily? IE calls and talk time, that sort of thing? If so, how strict is management on hitting those?

Yep, the main thing is you either hit your sales goal or - if you don't - you have to hit a certain number of calls per day. I wouldn't say management is super strict on a daily basis, but if you aren't hitting it, they'll pull you into the office eventually to discuss.

Working at Belterra (IN) was quite an experience. I often wondered if I was living out some weird purgatory type experience as retribution for all of my previous sins. On the other hand, despite working and dealing to some of the oddest, fell out of the hills folks ever, it was a delightful place most of the time with lots of very good country folk who cared deeply about each other...and smoking...and gambling.
