Re: Ask me anything about being a stand up comedian
What if you wrote something that you were pretty sure would just kill in the hands of a famous comedian?
I wrote a short bit that I thought would fit perfectly in Mitch Fatel's routine, emailed him, and sadly got no reply

No. It would feel like watching somebody sleep with my wife.

This is good, now you could be the heckler. Just be sure when you yell out "You Suck!" it is directed at the guy and not your wife

Re: Ask me anything about being a stand up comedian
Op, do you ever play 1/2 at mohegan sun? I played with a guy who looks a lot like you (did in 04) and said he was a comedian. Naturally someone asked him to tell a joke, and I don't remember what it was but it was funny.
I only watched the embedded video itt and almost turned it off after the first joke about shape last names. Got better though, imo.

For the record that was my first live performance. But I do play at Mohegan and Foxwoods.

Re: Ask me anything about being a stand up comedian
Do you ever feel somewhat under pressure to play the role of the "funny guy" around your friends?
I mean with people like Carlin or whoever who's act is based on anger and frustration I'd imagine it wouldn't be difficult for them to be as un-funny as they liked around people without the situation seeming awkward, but with some comedians who are more the "jolly" type I'd imagine that even subconciously they'd feel it a bit strange to be around someone who identified themselves as a stand-up comedian but simply happened not to be in a particularly funny mood that day.
I hope I'm wrong, but I'd expect a lot of people would feel quite pressurized by feeling they had to perform all the time.

I, like most comics, am an introvert, so I tend to sit back and observe in most situations that I am in. It's pretty much how I get all my material. I have plenty of friends who are much funnier than I am in a group, being on stage however, is a much different animal.

Re: Ask me anything about being a stand up comedian
that's interesting, and in my completely uninformed opinion I can totally understand it.
Iyo, give a funny/balls ratio of what it takes to be a successful stand up comedian (someone who can make money doing it). I'd guess 20/80 at least.

I'd say funny/skill is 75%. It doesn't take much to get up there. It's only nerve racking until the first time you bomb. Once you bomb it's smooth sailing. You are constantly thinking "I hope I don't bomb, I hope I don't bomb", and then you bomb and you are like "oh this isn't so bad. And you build some confidence.

Re: Ask me anything about being a stand up comedian
Awesome thread, always like to hear opinions and stories from guys that do stand up. I'm sure there are more stressful jobs but I'm always amazed by how easily the good ones make it seem.

Re: Ask me anything about being a stand up comedian
how long did you go before getting a booking agent?
how did you go about getting one?
how long did you do open mic's before you started getting actual bookings?
would you take a look at my pretty pathetic 1st 3 standup attempts at a local open mic comedy club?
they're on youtube and i will PM you a link if you wouldn't mind giving me some feedback (they're not very long only about 3-5mins each).
