Re: Ask me anything about being a stand up comedian

Who are your favorite relatively unknown comedians? Who do you think is horribly overrated (other than Dane Cook)? Where did you get started doing standup, and are there any particular cities you would recommend for a standup just getting started (or places that would be horrible for this)? For example moving to LA or New York for an unestablished standup: Good move or bad move?

Are you ever afraid to tell people what you do, either because of how they'll act or what stupid question they'll ask?

Every job I have ever had when I first started and they find out that I am a comic -"You will get a ton of material here then." Oh really Marge, will I?

I think its the hardest thing to do to get up in front of a room of people you have never met, and make them laugh. You are literally being judged every 27 seconds.

LOL. Yeah, that was not intended for comedy. Pretty much was getting sick of golf. On major golf tilt.

Re: Ask me anything about being a stand up comedian

I have always been called a comedian by family/friends. I am also shy/not very outgoing. Any tips to help someone like me from being so shy so I could give stand-up a try. I do well in front of people I know but strangers I think nerves would present a problem.

My favorite comics that nobody has ever heard of are right here in Boston.
Steve Macone - Could headline any room in America, and is legit funny. I don't laugh at many other comics, but he brings tears to my eyes.
Matt Kona - Another hilarious guy, has a really weird style about him.
Al Park - I started using him when he was doing open mics to open for me, and he is on his way to being a really good comic.

I don't have enough time to go through all the overrated comics out there. Lisa Lampanellia, her schtick is basically a madlibs. You're so insert adjective that insert noun here wouldn't even insert verb here you.

In this day with youtube, it does not matter what city you live in. I moved to Boston because it was easier to actually make money up here than in NYC. In NYC you have to sacrifice a lot in order to make it. Boston is much easier.

Re: Ask me anything about being a stand up comedian

I assume from the OP that you are primarily a feature with some limited experience headlining. Is this correct?

Trying to do a shows every month isn't very often. Are there other complicating factors in your life that prevent you from getting more time, and if so how have you tried to balance the competing pull of comedy and the rest of your life?

What is your reaction when you hear another comic with a bit similar to yours? Have you ever been accused or accused someone else (justifiably or not) of stealing material? If so how did play out and do you feel the issue was satisfactorily resolved?

Do you have a chik-fil-a joke yet, or are you patiently waiting for all the open mic'ers to STFU and move on to the next current event already?

Oh I see, so the amount of money you make determines how good of a comic you are? Greg Giraldo was 10 times better than Dane Cook, and I might make more than he did in my day job.

Dice Clay was first one.

Yes this is correct.

I have a regular job, and a family, so it is tough, but when I feel I have enough material to go back out there thats when I decide to put on a show.

What is your reaction when you hear another comic with a bit similar to yours? Have you ever been accused or accused someone else (justifiably or not) of stealing material? If so how did play out and do you feel the issue was satisfactorily resolved?

George Carlin wrote a joke verbatim for a joke I wrote. Did he steal it from me? I highly doubt it, people can have the same thoughts. It is widely known that Dennis Leary stole Tony V's act and ran with it to fame and fortune.

Do you have a chik-fil-a joke yet, or are you patiently waiting for all the open mic'ers to STFU and move on to the next current event already?

I'll leave those things to the Jesolnik's of the world.

Re: Ask me anything about being a stand up comedian

Takes hella courage to get on stage and try to make people laugh. Hats off!

How long do you typically take practicing your delivery in the mirror?

Do you run your material by family, friends, other comedians, etc. first before you take to stage or just say fk it? If you like it it's in.
