Now that it can be downloaded for free from Google it's becoming quite popular by everyone due to it's small learning curve and ease of use. What I can do in an hour on SketchUp would take me 4 hours to do in AutoCAD

Lol this is good.

Ive seen another one where there is a leader pointing to some part of a set of stairs. And where the leader cuts across the stairs the builder built another step in that spot.

Say an engineers hourly charge out rate is $250. Do you really think a client who sees, say 40 hours of Level 4 engineer @ 250 plus 15 hours of drafting @ 250??

WHen those drafting hours could be charged out at ~$150/hr by a draftsmen.

It is simply not worth it for an engineer to learn CAD. As long as you are busy, you are losing money if you are drafting while being an engineer.
Are you saying you or the company you work for charges ~$150/hr for drafting?

Re: Ask me anything about being a draftsman

My dad draws house plans and I used to play with his software back in the day. I had some interesting ideas. I made a triangle house once and all my designs had a toilet right by the front door. Do you ever get bored and make really crazy designs and if so, do you have any to share?

Yes. We focus mainly on big mining jobs rather than small residential jobs.

Our charge out rate is around 4 times the rate we get paid personally. And obv, its different depending on the level of draftsmen. A 1st year apprentice charge out rate is something like $80/hr

Woops I cant read the question. That is the company's charge out rate for a level 3 draftsmen.

Do you ever do patent drawings for extra money? Seems like it would use alot of the skills you already possess.

Have you noticed your eyesight getting worse since you've become a draftsman? Do you wear glasses? What do you think the percentage of your drafting coworkers is that wear glasses? Do you use special monitors or software to help with glare?
