I grew up in the Midwest and have always stood "in line" at the grocery store. I never heard the phrase "on line" until the interwebs came along. A year or so ago I noticed someone say he was waiting "on line" at the store, and have since heard it everywhere and it's drivin me nuts. Who says this??

Do people actually have to toe a painted line at grocery stores in the northeast

Otherwise you're standing in line ldo

Early in The Godfather Part II, Connie says that she needs to see Michael and isn't going to wait "on line." That's the only time I've ever heard that weird ****, but it does fit since the Corleones were New Yorkers.

"On line" is terrible. Without seeing it mentioned a couple times in OOT I wouldn't know about it.

I was at Jack and his Box a few weeks ago. There was a dude there leaning against a rail, so I wasn't sure if he had already ordered or not. I asked, and he grunted something I took to mean I could go in front of him. When I did, he said "I said I'm on line!"

JFC, what a stupid thing to say. I wonder how I would have taken it if I hadn't recently been made aware that some people say that.

"On line" is said by the same people that call spaghetti sauce "gravy".

LKJ,

Far less common than "on line" (which I agree is stupid), but yes.

Italians call spaghetti sauce gravy, like in Goodfellas.

Spaghetti sauce = gravy might be even weirder to me than "dilemna."

At least the ones in NYC do. That's a nice bit of arcana that hardly anybody outside of the region would know.
