Will I ever learn not to go grocery shopping when hungry?

Clearly the answer is no, but ;lakjsdfja8f3lhalandfa;o8hf;3ahflefd

Feel like this is more ammunition for the "We should have a continuous LC thread" crowd.

I'm in that crowd.

If you withdraw cash from an ATM and forget to take the cash from the machine, is there any way to get that money back?

It's a nice, new gas station with plenty of cameras.

I'm an idiot all around but was just wondering if I have any shot at getting those funds back. The store told me that no one turned in any cash from the ATM.

There are ATM's that will suck the cash back in if not retrieved in a given time period. (To cover your situation)

Was the ATM located inside the gas station building, or outside?

Inside of the gas station. Newly renovated gas station. There is a plastic cover that you have to pick up to retrieve your cash. It's located in a somewhat discreet location on the machine.

The ATM is located right by the front door.

There is also a flashing light that I somehow neglected to see. I'm somewhat new to this style of ATM but that's no excuse for me leaving the cash just sitting there.

I have the receipt for the transaction.

I hope that Mark is right that it just sucked the bills back but the way the bills are dispensed they just lay flat. Not attached to anything.

That's what I was afraid of, I think the machine you described doesn't necessarily take back uncollected notes. I mean you can maybe get a camera check and see if the next customer had a lucky windfall, that video might be mysteriously unavailable if a member of staff took advanatge of your largesse.

It's also possible that the next person took the money inside and left it with the counter clerk, so you may as well call the gas station too.

Is forgetting to take cash from an ATM a common problem? How can this even happen? Have you even gone into a restroom and forgotten to use it while you were in there?

I mean, that was my question too, it's a 30 second transaction that has literally only that single solitary purpose. It's not like going to the store and forgetting to grab milk.

Also, what would everyone do if they rolled up to an ATM and there was, say, $100 in cash sitting in it? Who would you return it to, if anyone? Doubt I'm just giving $100 to the guy at the counter and saying "this was in the ATM, take care of it".

Heard Gallagher tell this joke circa 1982:

"They tell you to eat a bunch of food before you go to the grocery store so you're not hungry.

That don't work for the liquor store".

Fairly common. I've forgotten to get my card out of a machine before and when I figured it out and ran back it was already swallowed up. My theory: ATM withdrawals are so common that it just becomes routine, and once you've finished the routine you just leave without actually putting any actual thought into it. Where I was living at the time you would do your transaction then it would give you your card and once you took it the machine would give you your money. The place where I lost my card was the opposite. I did my transaction, the machine gave me my money and without thinking I started shoving it into my wallet and walked out because with the routine I was used to once I got the money I had everything and the transaction was over.

I've seen a drunk guy in Vegas leave his card in the ATM. Not quite the same I guess. Considering the guy could hardly stand while using the machine, he sure did disappear fast in the 10 seconds it took me to notice the card left behind. Guess he was in a hurry to go lose it.

Leaving the card in a machine where you insert it and it stays in the machine until you are done makes exponentially more sense to me than withdrawing cash and never picking it up

It's stupid. But we all do stupid things sometimes. Once I went to Wendy's, paid for my food at the first window, and then just drove by the second window and left without getting my food. Of course I realized 1 minute later and circled back. But yeah, dumb!

It gets easier to do dumb **** like this as you age. I've left my card in an ATM before. Never money, however.
