chillrob,

I'm not sure what I did to upset you, but reporting every post I make in this thread from here on out probably isn't going to accomplish anything. I won't hold a grudge against you or anything but just saying you shouldn't really expect any actions to come of it.

How much action on RBK would it take to make an iq competition happen?

The company sucks a big one too. Don't do it unless you're really bored.
Yeah, guy who made 900 bucks net drove 50 hours a week but put on 30,000 miles on his car! I guess get a cheapish 4 door and try and trade in after 3 years.

It'll take a little while but drivers will catch on and prices will go up. They'll probably end up being somewhere near what taxi drivers are currently charging, maybe slightly less.
Thats the whole point of Uber, to undercut the regular taxis and provide cheaper service. Those cuts come from not having to tip etc. Don't you have to get a hack license operators license to drive for uber. Lets say you live an hour away from where they provide service, will they allow you to drive there or tell you they don't provide service in your area?

I have been complaining about this for months. Uber surge is not a true market because there isn't enough supply, the surge only affects demand. There needs to be people on the road that may or may not work for uber depending on if it is surging. Uber hasn't really put enough mechanisms in that allow for these "swing drivers" to be signaled to turn on the app. Maybe that has changed recently I don't know, but as I understand if for example I want to be alerted to and only drive surges, as I understand that's really hard if not impossible to do.

Alex,

Yeah, that's largely true. Uber doesn't want to make that easier because it would lead to spikier surges. They want the opposite - more predictable/consistent pricing for riders. They'd rather have fares staying between 1.4-1.6x for an hour with a relatively fixed supply than swinging between 1.0 and 2.0 for that period with a truly dynamic supply.

so why hasn't RBK answered how much action he needs for the IQ wager?

Are you speculating that this is the reason or do you have some type of inside knowledge that says this is the case? As I understand making it easier would just create less pressure on surges, so that basically the surge price would be more often lower.

Alex,

Combination of talking to friends who work there and reading stuff that has been published. In a nutshell, doing what you said would give drivers more control over what pricing is at any given time. That's not something they want.

El D,

Collectively yes but individually no. Drivers can't influence pricing in a coherent way unless they collude, which strikes me as both unlikely and unsustainable.

HT,

Whether individually or collectively, the more transparent pricing is to drivers, the more ability they have to influence it.

This is very surprising to me. I still don't agree (in the sense that I don't think its correct for Uber to have that policy), but I defer to them, they have smart people working on it obviously, so I guess there's just something I'm not seeing.

Buddy has been uber driving in Vancouver, Washington. Called me yesterday to tell me he drove a couple of hot young girls home and got a tip of $5, a titty flash, and a half ounce of weed.

If you want to see a crazy number look at 12:15 am right after New Years. Pretty sure when Uber just got to Philly my friend was at a Casino in Philadelphia, Sugar House and she had to take a cab 1.5 miles in snow/poor weather. It was 115 bucks. Normal fare is probably 6-8. She was in heels and I guess had no other choice at the time.....I would have just stayed at the casino for a few more hours to the rates dropped.

Just rode with a Lyft driver who insisted he made $2k/week with his Honda Pilot (he gets both Lyft & Lyft+ calls). I have no idea why he felt the need to bull**** me, but I'm definitely calling bull****. NFW he makes that much at either $.90/mile (Lyft) or $1.65/mile (Lyft+) even working 50 hours/week. And especially NFW he nets anything close to that after gas + depreciation on his brand new vehicle.

Internal Uber calculations, provided to BuzzFeed News by Uber, based on data spanning more than a million rides and covering thousands of drivers in three major U.S. markets — Denver, Detroit, and Houston — suggest that drivers in each of the three markets overall earned less than an average of $13.25 an hour after expenses.
Doesn't seem that bad imo

there are 8,000 hours in a year. At 13.25/hr that's way over 100k!
