Anyone have experience getting new teeth? Anyone have experience getting new teeth?

I'm in my thirties, and despite brushing twice a day and flossing every night, my gums have receded to a concerning degree. Last time I was at the dentist, the hygienist told me she was surprised my teeth weren't loose considering how receded my gums were. So I assume I'm destined for false teeth at some point in the next decade, and I'm wondering if there's a benefit to doing it now rather than later. I want to know if you guys have any wisdom or advice on this topic that dentists might not be forthcoming with. I'm in USA (#1) if that has any relevance.

This absolutely sounds like a nutritional issue (virtually all gum disease is). It should be reversible. Work on the health of your gut biota and get an electrolyte analysis. And if you eat a high refined-carb diet, change it.

Google receding gums and nutrition. It's fairly mainstream, you'll find 100 reputable citations.

Well, I did some googling and I came up a bit short. I'm afraid you're going to have to provide those reputable citations, because I can't find them amidst all the holistic mumbo jumbo bull****.

Didn't we used to have a guy who was deciding whether to continue his dentistry schooling or play poker full time?

not sure if this is just a lie to get someone else to google for you, but here is literally the first result for "gum disease nutrition"

That article does not back up what the NewOldGuy posted, and barely backs up its own vague and heavily qualified suppositions.

That also isn't a real medical journal.

Gum issues can also be about lifestyle habits as well. Do you smoke, drink, do crack, exposure to whatever toxic stuff ect. Lots of variables. Saying just nutrition with no real background history on the patient is not what a science minded person would do.

I am fairly confident that NewOldGuy's post is nonsense and that the #1 factor in gum disease is poor oral hygiene and not nutritional issues. The main nutritional issue that can contribute to gum disease seems to be malnutrition--not issues with gut flora and electrolytes--and I doubt OP suffers from malnutrition.

OP,

keep your teeth as long as you can. NOTHING, no tooth implant is gonna ever be as good as your own teeth. Think about your food, oral hygiene, not only about nutritional value but also about structure and texture of the food. But try to keep your own teeth.

Also usually a good doc can help with gum issues. Many don't do it, but they can. I had often blood on my tooth brush for years until I changed my dentist. Three injection of something by a new dentist has completely resolved the issue.

Fight for your teeth!

Are you talking implants or dentures? If dentures, are you married? If not, bringing home a partner for the night and having to soak your teeth in a glass on your nightstand will probably kill your game. Keep your teeth as long as possible unless you can afford implants. Don't get dentures in your 30s unless your teeth are rotted out/missing.

I'd get the opinion of the dentist, not the hygienist. There are also dentists that have expertise in gum disease and could likely help you in preventing further issues. Do whatever's necessary to keep your native teeth.

Has anyone actually told you your teeth are likely going to be falling out soon????? Or you just take some offhand comment from someone and run with it? If your worried enough to post on here you should ask the actual dentist!

Pretty much the entire world suffers from malnutrition, some due to lack of access to suitable food, many due to abysmal governmental health guidelines and an abundance of nutritionally deficient, calorically robust ****-food.

I do know an interesting fact. Dentists that are unsuccessful at suicide experience a 30% increase in income.

Get a sweet-ass grill to help hold in your nasty choppers and make them look like a million bucks.

I'm wondering why she didn't call the dentist in to take a look at your mouth.

At the small dental practice I use (a handful of hygienists and two dentists), even when one is there for just a cleaning the dentist always makes himself available to come into the room if the hygienist or patient has a concern.

Dental hygenists overstepping their bounds remind me of teachers offering informal mental health diagnoses and behavior plans and **** to parents.

How about you clean my teeth, stay in your lane & get me the MD TYVM.

Dental implants are quite expensive especially good ones from quality oral surgeons. If you can avoid it I would. I have 1 tooth that I broke grinding my teeth during sleep and it costs me around 6k--and it was a back tooth. The front teeth are really difficult to do well--I've dated a girl who spent 40k on 1 front tooth and it still looked bad and one of my friends here spent around 25k on his and it looks okay.

He said his dental hygiene was good. So nutrition. He can look into it himself and find out I'm probably right, or he can ignore it and get his implants.

Although some studies suggest that improving nutrition and supplementation of vitamins and minerals, particularly vitamin C, may contribute to improvement of periodontal health, there are a number of limitations of the current research that should be overcome. The reported treatment effects are too small to indicate the magnitude of therapeutic supplements when used as an adjunct to periodontal therapy. Hence, well-designed, long-term studies are needed to ascertain the direct effects of dietary supplements on the outcomes on periodontal diseases.
