Anybody living without television? Anybody living without television?

Tried living with no TV and gave up after 2 days.

Tried living with no TV apart from GoT and gave up after 6 days.

By no TV I include watching films at cinemas, downloading/streaming online etc.

It would probably take a decent amount of cash for me to stick to it for a long period of time, there is just too much great things to watch.

wait what?...it was just a comment wrt to an earlier post in this! thread....

perhaps you don't find it interesting(or even not 'awful') that someone is able to make millions investing w/o the benefit of up to date news...but i do.

One of the main reasons it is so hard to beat indexes is behavior risk. An investor who ignores news outlets and only looks at SEC filings, etc. should have greater expected returns than someone who is letting noise influence his decisions.

TV isn't anywhere close to "up to date news". That's called a Bloomberg terminal and costs about two grand a month last I heard.

As for the OP, living without tv? I have Comcast, so... yeah, I'm living without tv.

My service appointment is in a week, though, so my fingers are crossed!

I haven't owned nor watched TV for 2 years. I assume having Netflix and ************ on my laptop doesn't count.

Yes and no. Most news is absolutely worthless garbage. However, so are most SEC filings. Investors who ignore all news in favor of only looking at SEC filings aren't doing themselves any favors.

Haven't owned a tv for years.

I haven't read the thread yet but I mean, I have TV's all over the house but I could easily do without them. I spend a lot of my time online these days with online poker study/play and when I'm this into something that's online, I never have the TV on in my room anyway. Most of what's on TV today is absolutely horrible and just a waste of time. It doesn't even pacify me for a few minutes anymore the majority of the time.

I'm forced to watch it with my girlfriend, family, and friends but I'm pretty vocal about thinking that quite a bit of what I'm watching point blank sucks compared to the way things were in the 8-20 year ago range.

Anyway, yeah...I find using a good laptop or desktop that's hooked up to a fast internet connection to be, by far, my only necessary piece of hardware like that. A TV is just a totally outdated, non-interactive, static piece of equipment here in 2014.

Awesome, big TV-s cost basically nothing nowadays, and many hipsters are proud that they don't have TV, then proceed to watch TV-shows on their computer... Go figure.

I understand not having anything but computer connected to TV i.e. no cable, but unless you are really poor or live in a small dorm, why the hell wouldn't you buy decent sized screen to watch stuff on?

Why hell you even need TV?... Poker Stars show running 24/7... Action, drama, comedy! Rake and love!.... No... No love... Only rake....

Gf and I are moving soon, and are cancelling cable. Just Netflix and streaming sports ftw!

I don't think it'll be hard, esp because I am ridiculously far behind on my reading.

Haven't had a TV in 2 years. Technology makes getting by without one ridiculously easy. If I didn't have a desktop, iPad, and smartphone, I'd definitely have one

Internet is the new TV. This question is like asking people about living without radio 30 years ago.

I've done without TV for longer periods because **** Comcast. We have Verizon FIOS now which we like somewhat better, but it's not really essential. As far as actual use it's 10% her shows, 5% my shows, 10% Comedy Central, 15% whatever we find on the movie channels, and 60% background noise.

This thread is kind of funny:

"I haven't watched tv in years. I have 3 2560x1600 monitors, netflix, hulu plus, amazon prime, crackle, epix, vudu, cinema now, m-go, roku, apple tv, aereo, hbo go, fox on demand, itv, blinkbox and a $4000 tuner card that gets me any broadcast from around the globe. Nope, I never watch tv."

Ended a terrible poker-session, then decided to turn off the music, and put the TV on. It worked, for about 5 minutes, then the screen got dark.
It's definintely broke, cause now it starts smelling like it burns inside. But I'm so pissed atm, I'll just go to bed and hope the worst. Not going to buy a new TV, there's only **** on there, anyway.

A better thing to do with my time, than just donkishly watching TV, could be writing a book. I've read a book, lately. And I can do countless posts on here to warm up for writing that book - it'd be in my native language / just trying to work on hitting the keys correctly, and quickly

Didn't go to the gym for 8 days now, and feel like beating some random stranger half dead could be the biggest pleisure of my life atm, so I'm contemplating to already reg new gym on Monday, instead of Thursday, out of altruistic reasons. Taking time off of anything I like is bad, and makes me feel bad. Hence why I'll stop stopping to smoke and drink, and continue to go to the gym in the spare times. But I never liked TV conciously.

I've lived on my own for 3 years now and I've never had cable. I do own a tv which I use to play xbox and watch hbo etc thanks to chromecast. I don't miss cable, but I do feel left out sometimes because people will make conversation about such and such on tv and I can't relate.

What I like mostly about cable is their (free) on demand services. Background noise is great as well imo.

Anybody doing no internet and no tv? LOL silly question for an internet forum but there are times I really limit both just cuz I'd drained so much time watching tv, playing video games and doing whatever on the net. It's interesting to see the changes that are made in living when you give something up that consumes so much of your time. You get super productive lol.

Doing without tv and home wifi, but not voluntarily. Quite a change.

Any idea how common this is?

Outside of my parents this is the case for at least 80% of the people I interact with on a regular basis now (if you include netflix and a PS3/4, XBOX and Roku(.

Fairly confident that in the next 10 years cable TV as we know it won't really be a thing.

What kind of tv, video and internet habits do you let them have? Looking at it like a mental diet for myself got me thinking when I have kids that I will probably either severely restrict of just do without tv as I don't want them to be like me and others who were basically entertainment addicts. I had cousins who were poor and had only basic cable like from an antenna and all ended up smart as **** and impressively well read next to the standard American and 2/3 are educated and moved on to great things. Another thing is that when people are drawn to screens of tvs in any room they were almost immune to the tvs hypnotic effects. It was as if were are programmed to loose ourselves looking at these screens and they just kinda saw them as dull and unfullfilling, as if inanimate objects with no interesting qualities.

Seems like not letting them feast on junk food for the brain is just as important as making sure they don't ingest Mickey Ds everyday and smoke unfiltered cigarettes.
