So, this discussion came up today between a prop betting friend of mine and I, and because the bet is impossible to resolve he wanted me to post it for opinions.

Two people, average height, average weight - defined by him to be 5'10" 180lbs, both run the exact same time in a 5 mile race today. So right now, these two people have the exact same 5 mile time without cheating in any way. In one year they will race 5 miles again.

Person A will sit on the couch or sleep for 23 hours per day and for the last one hour he will walk as fast as he can, training for the 5 mile race.

Person B will sit on the couch or sleep for 23 hours per day and for the last one hour he will lift weights, in any manor he chooses, training for the 5 mile race. He can't run, he can't walk, he has to go to the gym and lift weights, but he can choose any routine or system that he wants and his only goal is to win the 5 mile race.

Who is the favourite to win the 5 mile race in one year and how big of a favourite is he?

The weight lifter, ldo. can still do aerobic workouts and can increase weight and train harder and improve faster

Moot point unless he can travel to said manor via supersonic couch.

No. It is flat - it is a track.

the weight trainer has a much higher risk of injury.

Kind of a strange hypothetical but I would have to imagine that person A would have a big advantage. Imagine not walking for an entire year. I think person B would lose a lot of 'muscle memory' that person A would keep sharp by speed walking for an entire hour every single day for a year.

Of course person B could try to counter by working out different leg muscles, but I think the way the muscles work together play a large factor in competitive running. Working out different muscle groups individually is different from using all of the groups in one activity that is very similar to the one that will happen after a year. It is hard to quantify how much of an edge I would give player A but it would be substantial.

Also, this should be a public poll.

Weightlifting is a generic term and could be interpreted so that the weightlifter has a significant edge here under the practically no rules described. Under reasonable restrictions the weight lifter would still have a significant edge.

With the weightlifter taking breaks, not making use of the full hour and really not working out much at all it might be close.

This seems deliberately undefined and could possibly even include running with ankle weights.

This is not even close as described...the walker wins all day long. The walkers training mimics the actual bet a lot better.

Ya this is what i mean. The weightlifter would have to be severely restricted in how he can workout for this to be a debate.

So the weightlifter can't take 2 consecutive steps for an entire year? Obviously he won't be able to run at all atfer a year of that. This is a truly dumb debate, because it way too broad on what the weightlifter can and can't do.

insane kettlebell routine but extremely light weight along with a variety of explosive movements, followed by 23 hours of eating, sleeping and couchstretching.

Ok, so I didn't mean this to be as literal as it is being interpreted, but I can not modify the original post.

The weight lifter can walk from his couch to the weights at a lethargic pace. He can walk from weight lifting area to weight lifting area and can perform the necessary body mechanics required to perform a normal workout regimen. He is not going to be magically transported from the squat rack to the bench press to the couch.

The weight lifter can also do any type of weight lifting exercise he can imagine. I realize this is a little vague, and that is because there are a lot of weight lifting exercises that I don't know about, but if they can be reasonably classified as lifting weights then they count. If he wants to set up in a squat position and then jump up and down instead of performing a squat and he has weights on his back then to me, this counts.

He can not walk or run in a manor that could be considered training. He can perform lunges with weights.

Walking fast is much easier to define - it means walking fast. As fast as you can. Without any additional weights other than your naked body.

I hope this clarifies things.

They are perfectly healthy average adult males. Their diets are not restrictive and can suit their respective life styles. Supplements and steroids are excluded. You must eat food.
